Ik merk dat de jury er nog altijd uit is, wat dit boek precies is: een collectie essays over hoe aan grote wetenschappelijke uitvindingen en inzichten altijd een gevaarlijke keerzijde zit (zoals de uitvinding van kunstmest en het afgeleid gebruik als gifgas), een collectie docu-ficties over grote wetenschappelijke debatten in de 20ste eeuw (zoals die tussen de klassieke fysica en de quantummechanica), of een collectie gefictionaliseerde verhalen over de clash tussen wiskundige en wetenschappelijke geniën die zich op het randje van de waanzin bevinden, en soms er duidelijk over? Benjamin Labatut maakt het de lezer die wil doorgronden wat hij schrijft, niet gemakkelijk, dat blijkt alleen al uit de verwijzingen die ik hier in de reviews lees naar W.G. Sebald en Laurent Binet. Het is duidelijk dat hij speelt met de grenzen tussen feit en fictie, zonder ‘alternative truths’ te bieden. Integendeel, ik vermoed dat hij juist wil wijzen op hoe onvatbaar de werkelijkheid is, tenminste niet voor wie eenduidige antwoorden verwacht. Daarmee betrapt hij ons op onhebbelijke gewoontes en voelen we ons ontmaskerd. En legt hij meteen bloot dat we de werkelijkheid nooit mogen onderschatten. Dit verhalen van Labatut lezen, ondanks hun wetenschappelijke achtergrond, vrij vlot, maar ik moet zeggen dat ze me uiteindelijk niet zo erg aanspraken als ik verwacht had. ( )
