Militant A.I.s, virtual realities, augmented realities and alternative realities; a city where murderers stalk the streets, where drug lords rule from the shadows, and where large sections of the population are locked in time stasis, but where tea is still sipped in cafés on the corner and the past still resonates with the future... Thirteen stories that look to the future of this diverse, multi-faceted city, that invite the reader to consider different perspectives. Stories that draw you in to possible tomorrows and suggest what may lie just beyond the city's ever-changing skyline. Neal Asher opens the anthology with a story set in his Polity Universe, Dave Hutchinson gives us a novelette from his Fractured Universe milieu, Jeremy Szal takes us to the world of his debut novel Stormblood, M.R. Carey, Aliette de Bodard, Geoff Ryman, Aliya Whiteley and a cast of equally talented writers transport us to Londons near and far... Contents: 1. Introduction by Ian Whates 2. Skin - Neal Asher 3. Fantastic collection of stories from some of my favorite writers as well as some who are new to me.

I (mostly) enjoyed this anthology. A couple of the stories were too much on the surreal side for my taste, but otherwise most were eminently enjoyable (despite one of the stories having an obvious spellchecker error). I've lived in London, commuted to London and visited London, and there's always something new to discover about the city. These stories whetted my appetite for more. Recommended - I shall have to look out for the companion volume.

With any collection of short stories I expect to like some, think others are OK, and not be too excited about the others. This collection surprised me in that I found every story compelling.

The list of contributors is impressive so one would expect a high standard and the stories in this collection live up to that expectation. There is a vast range of topics in the story from the statement of an AI that looks after the residents of part of London, to the story from a temporal engineer called in to deal with an anomaly at a theme park.

The stories certainly make the reader feel they are in London. There was enough detail to evoke a sense of London and where the action was taking place when I was reading the book, but it was not overdone.

I enjoyed all the stories and can recommend this collection to any Science Fiction fan who is looking for stories with a variety of subject matter.

Another great short story anthology from New Con Press. This is a companion to “Soot and Steel” a compilation of fantasy stories regarding the industrial age in London. The editor decided to look at London in the future with “London Centric.” Among the more entertaining stories are: a couple of cyber-punk adventures, an interesting story that takes CCTV cameras and advances them into AI, a sweet parallel universe story, the aftermath of a time bomb dropped on London, and a virtual commute to work that may never end. I enjoyed reading what different authors thought about the future of the British capitol. Some authors took technology that was already a part of London and advanced it in interesting and exciting ways. Other authors created odes to London; naming streets and neighborhoods and adding science fiction or fantasy elements. I was caught off guard by a few stories that mentioned the present-day issues of COVID-19 and Brexit. This is an enjoyable anthology and is highly recommended. ( )

London Centric collects over a dozen short science fiction stories centered in London, England. I've never been there, so I can't comment much on the theme, but it's a faithfully followed thread that bundles the stories together nicely.

It features a couple authors I'm familiar with (Neal Asher, Aliette de Bodard); their contributions are excellent, but neither their strongest work nor the book's. My favorites were a touching piece by Ida Keogh and a bizarre one by M.R. Carey, but almost every story here is good.

There are a couple exceptions; one story in particular appears to have defied any attempt at proofreading - and slipped by the editor's high standards.

Mainly though, it's another solid collection of worthy stories collected by Ian Whates. ( )
