"A queen, a castle, a dark and ageless threat--all await Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes in this chilling new adventure. The queen is Marie of Roumania: the doubly royal granddaughter to Victoria, Empress of the British Empire, and Alexander II, Tsar of Russia. A famous beauty who was married at seventeen into Roumania's young dynasty, Marie had beguiled the Paris Peace Conference into returning her adopted country's long-lost provinces, single-handedly transforming Roumania from a backwater into a force. The castle is Bran: a tall, quirky, ancient structure perched on high rocks overlooking the border between Roumania and its newly regained territory of Transylvania. The castle was a gift to Queen Marie, a thanks from her people, and she loves it as she loves her own children. The threat is...now, that is less clear. Shadowy figures, vague whispers, the fears of girls, dangers that may only be accidents. But this is a land of long memory and hidden corners, a land that had known Vlad the Impaler, a land from whose churchyards the shades creep. When Queen Marie calls, Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes are as dubious as they are reluctant. But a young girl is involved, and a beautiful queen. Surely it won't take long to shine light on this unlikely case of what would seem to be strigoi? Or, as they are known in the West...vampires"--… (meer)

There's not a strong focus on detective work in this one, and the solution to the central mystery gives off Scooby-Doo vibes. However, the Transylvanian setting is cool, the historical details interesting, and Russell and Holmes are still great characters. ( )

Laurie R. King - Castle Shade: Oof, dark. But I loved the hidey-holes and the real-life explanations of vampires (and why we’re obsessed with them). #cursorybookreviews #cursoryreviews ( )

After Riviera Gold, Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes travel to Bran, a castle owned by the queen of Roumania.

As always, I like seeing the world (and history) through Russell’s eyes, but I didn’t find the scenery consistently appealing nor the mystery consistently captivating. Because of objective issues with the pacing? Or because of subjective objections about the Dracula vibe? (Dracula is really not my brand of Gothic.) I remember reaching a conclusion but I read this a few months ago now and can’t remember what that conclusion was. ( )

Another great episode from the chronicles of Mary Russell and her husband, Sherlock Holmes. As this series progresses, Mary has become more confident in her abilities and her modern feminist worldview is slowly affecting Sherlock's. In the canon, Sherlock often seemed unprepared for dealing with women, most notably with that woman, Irene Adler, and with Mary by his side, he's become more aware of his limitations.. As this series has evolved, it is more Mary's story with Sherlock cloaked in the shadows.

Castle Shade weaves together threads of Count Dracula and Europe between the two world wars to create an engaging mystery (and made me aware that I really need to understand more about the history of that period!). Another must-read from Laurie King!

As usual a very good book in the Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes series. Quite interesting mystery and fabulous setting (who doesn't find Transylavina fascinating?)

I've been a fan of this series since I was a teenager and have read every book released. You can read this book and the other ones as stand-alone. However, I do recommend reading from the beginning. ( )
