Gelezen toen ziek voorjaar 2021, de hele trilogie, omdat ik bezig was oude, niet te zware berpeme nooit gelezen boeken te lezen. Zeker deel 1 viel me helemaal niet tegen, ook tweer niet, maar bij drie had ik het wel gezien. Nobelprijs? Mmmmm. Maar zeker meeswlepend, invoelend, niet eenzijdig, wel wat sentimenteel.Een ongekend China, dat begint in de 19e eeuw maar qua politiek en mentaliteit 'middeleeuws''De straatarme boer Wang Lung koopt een vrouw, daarmee begint het boek, of liever het is zijn trouwdag', Het eindigt met het moderne, maar vooroorlogse China. Handelsgeest en ondernemingslust brengen de nazaten van Wang tot rijke kooplieden -die ook weer verzwakken door het geld en de luxe. Een kleinzoon nwordt krijgsheer en ziet niet in dat de tijd daarvan voorbij is. Het familieverhaal maakt een authentieke indruk, zodat je verbijsterd raakt door de anarchie, de totale waardeloosheid van de vrouw, de achterlijkheid van het platteland waarvandaan bijna niemand ooit verder dan de dichtstbijzijnde nederzetting komt, en de uitzichtloze armoede, waar een paar theeblaadjes in het warme water al een enorme luxe zijn.
