This fine biography of H. L. Mencken tells of how he rose to his unique position as comic genius and pre-eminent critic of American culture. It is the story of a man whose massive power of invective inspired and infuriated his contemporaries and whose popularity and unpopularity mounted with the frenzied pace of the 1920s. Mencken sounded a loud, jarring note to a world governed by conformity and never hesitated to express his contempt for every kind of hypocrite, fake, and narrow-minded censor. Here also is Mencken's human side, not just his rambunctious wit but also his courtesy and hospitality, his support of struggling writers, and his personal foibles. What emerges is a compelling portrait of an extraordinary man. First released in 1951, this edition includes a new introduction and final chapter.… (meer)

I read this on a cold Sunday while we were still at our old house, in fact I read 30 pages walking back from the library. These texts cling to you, like Liebling, like Orwell. Those authors were carefully chosen.

Much of journalism's mantle has been maintained by this half-assed reader. One should hence reproduce or "share" with accompanying quotes from Derrida and Donne. ( )

The liberation of the human mind has never been furthered by ... dunderheads; it has been furthered by gay fellows who heaved dead cats into sanctuaries and then went roistering down the highways of the world, proving to all men that doubt , after all, was safe - that the god in the sanctuary was finite in his power, and hence a fraud. One horse-laugh is worth ten thousand syllogisms. It is not only more effective; it is also vastly more intelligent.

Any questioning of the moral ideas that prevail - the principal business, it must be plain, of the novelist, the serious dramatist, the professed inquirer into human motives and acts - is received with the utmost hostility. To attempt such an enterprise is to disturb the peace - and the disturber of the peace, in the national view, quickly passes over into the downright criminal.

This much seems certain: in the late fall of 1848, a lonely, proud Saxon youth named Burkhardt Ludwig Menkin landed in Baltimore with five hundred Thalers and a spanking new certificate bearing notice he had served apprenticeship to a cigar dealer.
