Wat een wereld, wat een boek. Groff dompelt je onder in de wereld van een vervallen abdij in 1158. Een wereld die mijlenver afstaat van onze huidige wereld en toch (jammer genoeg) zo herkenbaar is. Vrouwen worden beoordeeld op hun uiterlijk, worden verkracht, niet geloofd, als minderwaardig gezien.
De grote, grove Marie, 17 jaar wordt naar Engeland gestuurd om daar priorin te worden van een abdij. Ze kent niets van het abdijleven, is niet eens gelovig, maar ze is ongeschikt om uitgehuwelijkt te worden dus… Het leven in de abdij is hard: het is er koud en nat en iedereen heeft continu honger. Hoewel Marie de eerste jaren treurt en afziet, herpakt ze zich na een tijdje en begint de abdij dankzij haar te floreren. Op basis van haar visioenen groeit de rijkdom van haar abdij, en groeit haar macht. Cycli in levenslopen, in de seizoenen, de tijd en de natuur bieden troost en hoop en vertrouwen.
Soms rijst de vraag waar goede bedoelingen ophouden en machtswellust zegeviert. Hoe ver kan je gaan om ‘je vrouwen’ te beschermen? Een matrix is een moederweefsel waaruit een orgaan of een tumor of een ander soort weefsel ontstaat. Het is een ideale voedingsbodem en wat er uit groeit kan alle kanten op, de vraag is hoe die groei aanzien wordt.
Waar de nonnen vroeger taken kregen die ze niet goed konden geeft de nieuwe priorin hen net klusjes die ze goed kunnen, die ze dus beter uitvoeren en liever doen. Goed voor de abdij en de nonnen an sich. Aan alles merk je hoe groot de liefde voor haar zusters is. Ze creëert een zelfvoorzienende utopie, afgeschermd van de boze buitenwereld. Dat ze daarbij kerkelijke en morele grenzen schendt kun je haar amper kwalijk nemen. Liefde boven geloof.
Matrix geeft je een boeiende inkijk in een wereld vol krachtige, intelligente, passionele, onafhankelijke vrouwen. De middeleeuwen blijken toch niet zo donker te zijn geweest en ook vrouwen bekleedden toen al belangrijke rollen. De geschiedenis heeft hun verhalen wat laten verstoffen, geweldig dat Groff daar nu verandering in brengt. Feminisme, sisterhood, de female gaze. Matrix is een boeiend boek, een prachtig empowerend verhaal en het smeekt om een verfilming. (
