Patti Callahan Henry writes in such a manner that it speaks to my heart. I had figured out the secret of this book, but the way it unfolded and the healing of Cappy just hit home with me. I hope that other people experience the joy and sadness I did while reading this book. ( )

Have read many of the author's works and enjoy the reads. Book starts out with Sam, 2 years old and he must've followed the girls into the pond.
Nothing good ever happened to Catherine. 18 years later she watched her father leave and forget it was her birthday.
She inherits the house and Catherine returns to spread her father's ashes.
She worked in the media dept for the sports dept at the school. She dates Thurman but she has many doubts as to his dedication to her.
Forrest is writing an article about her dad and needs her help to finish it.
Story is in present but goes back to the past at times so we can understand things in the present.
Mystery of the painting her father returned to the island to see makes her wonder til she realizes where she saw it prior to hanging in the courthouse. ( )

OH my - I read this book in a day or so - I loved it. Patti Callahan Henry has become one of my favorite authors and i just finished "The Girl Who Chased the Moon" as well. While I really liked "the girl who . . ", I loved, loved "Between the Tides." It's about a 30 year old girl, Cappy, who returns to her home town after 18 year to scatter (or "toss" as she keeps saying) her father's ashes in the river that runs through town. Her family had left town after the drowning death of a two-year old boy Cappy was watching, and she feels responsible for his death. As she returns to her home town and starts the quest to fid truths, he story becomes one of loss, blame, forgiveness, and love. The story, is beautiful, the writing magical, and the characters spell-binding. While I did find that it took a long time for Cappy to come to the final realizations she made, I still loved every minute of reading it. A story that will stick to me for some time.

Between The Tides
Patti Callahan Henry’s great use of imagery in the book Between the Tides provided me with the opportunity to not only thoroughly see everything that the main character ( Catherine Leary) saw, but to also feel as though I was walking through the memories of her childhood with her. “We crossed the first bridge onto the sting of islands. The landscape rolled by like a carpet of sweet grass and marshland all the way to Seaboro. The perimeter of water and maritime forest that was once my playground moved past us in blurred green and brown waves, melding into a sage memory.”
Callahan was able to not only create a great image of the scenes that surrounded her main characters, but also give her readers an inside view as to what the main characters are really like. I learned, through reading that Catherine Leary and I have more in common, and then by reading the back cover, I could’ve imagined. Catherine Leary is described as a reader, but not just an avid reader. Catherine Leary was able to imagine herself into the book, much like I am; she is able to allow herself to go into a world that may not belong to her. In all of the books that I have read, I have never been able to make this connection with any of the character; I was only able to imagine that I was one of them.
Through the use of master techniques, Callahan was able to create a world within a book, to give her readers the opportunity to not only be able to view the world that the main characters walked through, but also give them the opportunity to connect to more than just one of the characters. For the first time I was able to understand how the characters were affected by the scene they were surrounded by, how their actions match their personalities, and the person that they were. Callahan’s great use of foreshadowing helped me to anticipate what would happen next, without giving it away.
As the book progressed, I found it harder to make connections with the characters that Callahan created, I was still able to understand the emotions that the characters felt, and I was able to feel those emotions with them. While reading this book, at times much like the characters I felt alone, I felt sad, I felt happy, Patti Callahan Henry, has the ability to make her readers feel what the characters feel. Patti Callahan Henry is an amazing author, which through writing is able to strike the emotions of her readers, and pull at their heartstrings. Catherine Leary was challenged with three probing questions, that I, as a reader, was forced to consider, Question one: What do you want to be doing when you die? Two: if you die today, what will you regret not having done? And Three: what do you want your tombstone to say?
