Fiction. Suspense. Thriller. HTML:

A murderer, a victim, and a witness... but no one in this house is innocent

Twenty years ago an unspeakable tragedy rocked Rose Yates's small, affluent hometown... and only Rose and her family know the truth about what happened.

Haunted by guilt, Rose escaped into a new life. Now she seems to have it all: a marriage, a son, a career. And then her husband is found dead.

As far as Detective Colin Pearson is concerned, Rose is guilty. Her marriage wasn't as happy as she'd led everyone to believe, and worse, she's connected to a twenty-year-old cold case. She can play the part of the victim, but he won't let her or her family escape justice this time around.

Grieving her husband and struggling to make ends meet, Rose returns home, hoping to finally confront her domineering father and unstable sister. But memories of a horrific crime echo through the house, and Rose soon learns that she can't trust anyone, especially not the people closest to her.

From USA Today bestselling author Carter Wilson comes a story of deception, hereditary sin, and what we'll do to protect our own.

Rose Yates returns home to Bury, NH after 20 years away. Her husband, Riley, has died, and she and her young son, Max, head from WI to NH to move in with her father. Rose is a novelist of murder mysteries. Colin, a detective in WI doesn't believe that Rose is innocent in the death of Riley, so he continues to investigate. When he sees similarities in the death of her husband to her novels, his suspicion iincreases.
In her latest novel, she writes about another crime, which alarms her sister, Cora, and her father, wealthy Logan Yates. They notice similarities to a missing person from 20 years ago.
Colin tracks Rose to NH and confronts her, forcing her to tell the truth about the various mysteries.
The ending leaves open the possibility of a sequel.
This is my first book by this author, I will look for more. It was a good mystery, but a bit gruesome at times. ( )

The Dead Husband by Carter Wilson is a family drama that puts “dys” in dysfunctional. The Yates family is comprised of the domineering father and two adult daughters, Rose and Cora. Rose and her young son have moved back to her father’s home in Bury, New Hampshire following her husband’s sudden death. To add to this cast of characters we have Detective Colin Pearson who thinks that Rose’s husband’s death is suspicious. To add to the drama, something horrible occurred with the Yates family twenty years ago and we are told about it in tiny segments, making this plot most suspenseful. This novel provides more questions than answers and keeps the reader’s attention throughout. The characters are so well-developed that it feels like we know them well. Their flawed lives remind us that not all families are happy and there are surprises around every corner. I would be very interested in reading more books by Carter Wilson. This tense family drama is definitely worth a look. Highly recommended. Thank you to Poisoned Pen Press, NetGalley and the author for the e-ARC in exchange for an honest review. ( )

New Hampshire, Wisconsin, family-dynamics, murder, multigenerational, dysfunctional-families, law-enforcement, psychological, thriller, writers, angst****

Told in alternating perspectives: New Hampshire with principal character and her son, and the Wisconsin' cop who feels that she fled after murdering her husband. Each is apparently attached to totally dysfunctional families. I really couldn't get into it for a variety of reasons. I finished it, but it became a chore for me. Guess I'm more inclined to procedurals.
Narrated by Erin DeWard with a decidedly melodramatic delivery.
I requested and received a temporary digital ARC of this book from Dreamscape Media and Poisoned Pen Press via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. ( )
