Hugo, Amro, Trema en Zefod komen terecht in het titelrestaurant. Tijdens een fantastische show maken ze het einde van het heelal mee. Zefod werkt zich alweer in moeilijkheden en onze vrienden moeten vluchten. In een ver verleden komen ze terecht op het schip van de totaal nutteloze Golgafringammer. Iedereen wil hen kwijt. Hun schip stort neer op een paradijselijke planeet. De oorspronkelijke inwoners sterven uit. De planeet blijkt de Aarde te zijn en de Golgafringammers blijken de voorouders van de mensen te zijn. ( )

This novel "The Restaurant at the End of the Universe" is the second novel of a series of novels.
An earlier (and quite different) version of this story was written by Adams for series 2 of the "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" radio programme, broadcast Christmas 1978 (one episode) and January 1980 (five episodes).
For this October 1980 novel by Adams, episodes from the radio programme were adapted:
The six episodes of radio series 2 are very substantially reworked, re-edited, and reduced for the adaptation.
The final pages of the book are actually an adaptation of the fifth and sixth episodes of radio series 1.
