ack Kelly packs a punch in his latest novel set in the deceptively quiet neighborhoods of 1950s Rochester, New York. Ike Van Savage's latest case starts out simple enough: a threatening husband and a beleaguered wife. But before he knows it, he's pulled into a serpentine mystery that involves the town's most notorious gangster, a dead heiress, and one too many 'accidents.' The time is 1959, Ike Van Savage, P.I. is hired by Vicky Petrone, wife of mobster, Joe Petrone. Vicky tells Ike that her husband intends to kill her. Joe knows that she doesn't love him anymore and his last two wives died under mysterious circumstances.

In this noir novel, Rochester is described as a town run by the mob. We learn quite a bit about Rochester at that time, the politics, the parties by the lake, and the way in which police look the other way when the mob is at work.

Ike is involved in three cases that intersect. Paddy Doyle, a slum landlord refuses to sell his inner city buildings to the mob. Then he sees the buildings set afire, one after another. He asks Ike's help in bringing the arsonist to justice or he'll have to provide his own form of justice.
Another case is where Ike is asked to investigate business owner Eddie Gill. Gill's wife is suspicious and wants Eddie followed. Ike confirms her concerns when he sees Eddie take a sisteen-year-old female employee to a nightclub and then to a motel.

Ike's investigations describe part of the city life, crime seems to be everywhere and the police are bought and paid for by the mob.

I enjoy this type of story with good action and dialogue. The reasons why the characters behave the way they do, is explained in thier words rather than getting into psychological reasons behind the actions.

The writing reminds me of Raymond Chandler and his great P.I. Philip Marlowe. Neither Marlowe nor Van Savage take a back seat to threats and get the job done at all costs, both men have a gruff exterior but warm hearts.

It's easy to visualize what is happening when the reader is given words like this, "We looked at each other, she tightened her eyes, and I knew she was talking the truth. Whatever it was between us was roaring down the tracks and it knocked my bitterness out of the way like so much horse feathers."

Yeah, baby! ( )
