The author was a battalion aid surgeon in the 7th army in Europe, 1944-45. A generally scathing account of the command structure of the WW 2 us army, while generally sympathetic to the front line soldiers. I will mention that the language is that of soldiers, so if you are bothered by profanity, be warned. I highly recommend this book. ( ) Brendan Phibbs, in his memoir of WWII, gives us in his own spicy vernacular the war as seen through the eyes of a battalion surgeon. Brendan, a newly graduated intern from the University of Chicago Medical School, went off to war in time for the memorable Battle of the Bulge. He brought with him a disdain for beaureaucratic thinking and became a favorite of the enlisted man who fought the battles on the front line. He, himself, was a doctor in a frontline aid station. Brendan carried the notes for this book in a leather pouch over the course of many years after he returned to the States to practice medicine. Following the death of his wife he found the notes and wrote this book which won a nomination for the Pulitzer Prize. A second re-titled edition, Our War for the World, was published in 2002. Brendan, at the age of 90, still does some teaching and still stirs up entrenched bureaucracy at the University of Arizona Medical School in Tucson, AZ. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
