Beklijvend verhaal... Kambili groeit op in een Nigeriaans middelklassegezin waar vader compleet in de klauw is van een bigot katholicisme en ook zijn zoon, dochter, vrouw in die greep dwingt. Bovendien is hij soms extreem geweldadig, dan weer mak als een lam. Hij blokkeert het contact met zijn 'heidense' vader en zijn meer vrijgevochten intelligente zus Ifeoma . Zij is ondanks materiële beperkingen een gelukkige vrouw en moeder voor haar kinderen. Een totaal andere wereld gaat open voor Kambili en haar broer Jaja tijdens de schaarse logeermomenten. De verlegen Kambili kruipt voorzichtig uit haar schelp als ze ziet hoe warmhartig de 'heidense' grootvader naar het leven en zijn goden kijkt. Ze spiegelt zich aan nichtje Akama. Toch heeft de verstoorde relatie met haar vader - die ze niet kan loslaten - t haar, haar broer en vooral haar moeder definitief getekend. ( )
Na De vlindermaand heb ik mij weer aan een roman over Afrika gewaagd. Adichie is in Nigeria geboren en opgegroeid, maar heeft in de Verenigde Staten gestudeerd. Zij schrijft weliswaar in het Engels, maar deze roman is doorspekt met worden uit het Igbo.
