The story focuses around selkies which is a nice spin on the traditional mermaid stories that are often in these stories. Overall, the story was enjoyable and I found the characters to be relatable -- aside from the selkies, as I am not a selkie. ( )Deze bespreking is geschreven voor LibraryThing Vroege Recensenten. I really enjoyed this book. It has a strong heroine who learns just how strong she is. It takes place during WWI, which was a refreshing change from all the WWII books out there. 'What Lies Beneath' is a fun, compelling book to read with interesting characters and a good story. I would have enjoyed more focus on Emma's relationships with other people in addition to Malcolm because many of the supporting characters were great. Overall I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys YA, historical fiction, and/or fantasy.Deze bespreking is geschreven voor LibraryThing Vroege Recensenten. Set during WWI about a young girl whose mother passed away and her father is called to serve. Going to the Cape Cod area to stay with her grandmother she starts learning about a past that everyone hid from her. Good story, but had a few slow moving parts. Great potential for a series. I really liked this story, this cover, and this setting. Emma (did I mention the main character has the same name as me? :) ) is a teenager during World War 1. She goes to live with her grandma in the town she was born in, but her summer does not go how she expects. We get to hang out with our determined heroine, a local boy with talent at rowing, and a bunch of adorable seals.I would recommend this book as an introductory book into historical fiction or as a clean book for a Sunday afternoon. Pair this with a nice tree and a bright sun and it's really the best thing a book-lover could look for. I was able to read this in one sitting and I stayed engaged throughout most of it. It has more intense action at the end and a conclusion that leaves you wanting more. Honestly, I would take an epilogue.

HTML: It's 1917, and everyone is doing their bit now that America has entered the Great War—everyone except 17-year-old Emma Verlaine. Her overprotective dad won't let her go to nursing school while he's off doing war work; instead, she's been sent to stay for the summer with her Gran on an island off Cape Cod, and the most she'll be able to do for the war effort is knit socks. Socks! As it happens, island life isn't so bad. There are the seals that seem even more fascinated by her than she is by them. There's the new Navy Air Station that guards the coast from German U-boats where she's determined to get a job. But most of all there's Malcolm, whose family owns a resort hotel on the island and who gives her swimming lessons and delicious kisses. But danger lurks in the waters off the island. Only Emma can save her new home—if she accepts that everything she thought she knew about her life is a lie, and that the seals are following her for a very good reason... .Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |
