Essa é a história de um menino de oito anos que vai ganhar um irmãozinho. Enquanto espera os pais voltarem da maternidade, ele recebe a visita de Mika, uma espécie de pequeno príncipe que parece de outro planeta. Os dois são muito diferentes, mas são muito parecidos também. Passam 24 horas juntos e conversam sobre temas interessantes como a origem da vida, os princípios da evolução e a extinção dos dinossauros. Quando Mika vai embora e os pais voltam com o bebê, o irmão mais velho sabe, de algum modo, que sua casa tem espaço para o novo habitante.

Quizá esta novela no sea para leerla sin compañía y, si se hace así, sea para después hablar de las cuestiones que plantea: el origen del universo, la vida en otros planetas o el evolucionismo. Si no se comenta resulta un libro aburrido con algún chispazo de ingenio en algún que otro momento.

El protagonista es Joakim, un hombre sin edad que cuenta a Camilla que le sucedió cuando era un niño de 8 años, que como tal resulta un personaje poco creíble y encajado en el argumento con calzador. Mika es el otro protagonista, un extraterrestre gritón y que hace reverencias cuando se le hace una pregunta interesante. El problema es que Joakim adopta esa costumbre y así nos los encontramos cada poco cual japoneses deseándose los buenos días.

Tan sólo una muestra del talante del libro. Pág. 105: “Y luego pronunció unas palabras que jamás olvidaré:
-Si hay un Dios, ¿entonces quién es? Y si no hay ningún Dios ¿entonces qué es el universo?”

Y qué le vamos a hacer, las ilustraciones tampoco me gustan. No me dicen nada, me parecen inexpresivas.

Wieso ist die Welt so wie sie ist? Und was bedeutet das Aufwachsen unter anderen Bedingungen. Gaarders ist so einfach wie tiefgründig: es kommt nicht darauf an, woher wir kommen, sondern wohin wir gehen.
Joackim schreibt einen Brief an Camilla, die eben erfahren hat, dass sie ein Geschwisterchen bekommt. Denn Joackim wurde selbst auf fantastische Weise auf seinen Bruder Mickael vorbereitet. Durch einen Besuch von Mika aus den Weiten des Weltalls. ( )

The story is written in the form of a letter to a child from her uncle, who was the same age as Camilla when his brother was born. The page layout directly recalls that classic, "The Little Prince", and the illustrations even feature the same small planet and very similar-looking characters. Love the illustrations! Although I dearly wished that Gardner didn't draw that rabbit, quite a distraction I tell you.

Eight-year-old Joe is waiting alone at home for the birth of his sibling when he sees something fall from the sky. It's Mika, from the planet Eljo, hanging by the seat of his pants in Joe's apple tree.

During the first meeting, the two explore the thought-provoking concept of when down becomes up and vice versa. This conversation begins a fast friendship for these two creatures from different worlds who discover they have much in common, and Joe teaches Mika all about planet Earth.

What was stressed was the importance of questioning everything, from what's a pancake to religious beliefs, makes this gentle story fun to read as well as eye-opening. They discuss the process of evolution, whether animals can think, how babies are born, the five senses, the existence of God, the structure of time, and the concept of meeting together on a mountaintop when each one lives in a metaphorical valley.

Gaarder shows how explaining what we take for granted to someone who's never experienced it can be exhilarating and fulfilling.

The fact that Mika disappears when Joe's brother is born may be predictable to older readers, but doesn't diminish the magic of the book, nor does the obvious fact that Mika is in truth an alien version of the long-awaited baby brother.
