Some characters possess the remarkable ability to manipulate their shadows, either through magic or by nourishing them through other means. While character building is a vital component of any story, there are moments where it seems the book could benefit from more depth and development in this aspect. The use of dual timelines, although intriguing, adds to the unhurried pace, requiring patience from those seeking immediate thrills. Aound 3/4 in, it does start to pick up. I just struggled to stay present with the book. The Book of Night may not live up to the high expectations set by her previous works. I still think she is a great author and will read her other works. My heart just wasn't in this one.
