Fragile aircraft, open cockpit, being shot at and, worst of all, no parachutes. Excellent first-person account. ( ) Perhaps the finest book on the combat pilot's experience that I've ever read. Certainly makes one want to quote Sherman, "War is hell." I think this book would be incredibly valuable to those seeking to gain insight into WWI's war in the air as it particularly captures terminology, techniques, and the daily routines of the pilots. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

There is no bitter snarl nor self-pity in this classic novel about the air war of 1914-1918, based very largely on the author's experiences. Combat, loneliness, fatigue, fear, comradeship, women, excitement--all are built into a vigorous and authentic structure by one of the most valiant pilots of the then Royal Flying Corps.
