This facsimile edition is a complete reproduction of the most reliable of the medieval manuscripts of The Canterbury Tales-the Hengwrt Manuscript (or Peniarth 392 D), now in the National Library of Wales, in Aberystwyth, Cardiganshire. Because it is to serve as the basic text of the Tales for the projected multivolume Variorum Edition of Chaucer’s complete works, much deliberation was given to the choice of the Hengwrt Manuscript. It is a singular pleasure to present the facsimile of the Hengwrt (Aberystwyth, National Library of Wales, Peniarth 392) manuscript of the Canterbury Tales with transcription of the Hengwrt and comparative readings from the Ellesmere text.

Introduction
The publication of the Hengwrt manuscript of the Canterbury Tales at the outset of the Variorum Chaucer project presents, for the first time in facsimile, this extremely important manuscript, which will serve as the base text for the Canterbury Tales in the Variorum.
