This feels like a drop off from the fast pace and excitement of Volume 4. Definitely much slower, and a bit of a drag at times. I still have a love for the characters, but it felt like not as much happened in this one. Oh, well. Every series can't just be banger after banger. ( )

Another absolutely wonderful volume in this wonderful book! I've really enjoyed my reread and this volume has, again, one of my favorite parts of the story: Yin Yu and Quan Yizhen's backstory. Just had a ton of fun with this! tai3_3's cover art is beautiful, and ZeldaCW's interior illustrations are lovely as ever.

There's a lot of great continuing mysteries and adventures in this volume, and a wonderful cast of characters and array of backstories.

I particularly loved all the Yin Yu bits with Quan Yizhen. Their story is so fun and tragic. And poor Yin Yu, he works so hard, and Xie Lian just doesn't give him a break to start with. I also love the teaser of Ruoye's backstory, which I think will be in the next volume? So I'm looking forward to that because that's actually my favorite part of the series. And Xie Lian and Hua Cheng flirting and cuddling was still lovely. I love how supportive Hua Cheng is, even when he thinks Xie Lian won't choose him as a lover. And I love Hua Cheng constantly reassuring Xie Lian, and trying to comfort him. Xie Lian's compassion is also lovely, even as he acknowledges that sometimes people do have to face a punishment for their wrongdoings, which... is debateably a good thing considering what punishments he thinks he deserves to face and why. But at least in most cases it's Pei Xiu, who let some zombies eat travelers, or Pei Ming, who's being sexist.

Pei Ming's sexism is also handled in a really neat way. It's a very good demonstration of benevolent sexism, and why it's still a problem. Like yes, he is a creepy and should know and learn better, and I didn't actually like the things he was doing, but the narrative highlights it well and handles it very well.

It's also interesting rereading this volume and realizing that while Xie Lian is having flashbacks to when Xianle fell... he's also possibly having flashbacks to what is probably in the next volume (when he was repeatedly killed at the temple). The dialogue is kind of specific while being open-ended enough that it can work for both things, and that's really neat. Tragic and neat.

I feel so bad for Yin Yu, and his situation is so relatable. It's frustrating when you try so hard to do everything right and still don't get anything for your efforts. Sometimes people succeed where you don't, and go far beyond you, in ways you can never replicate or hope to go beyond. And that's hard and miserable and it's difficult to let go of your jealousy and even hatred, and just be supportive. Yin Yu at least tried for so very long, but it's a difficult road. It's also a painful situation of newer generations outdoing the older, and what that feels like. Xie Lian's sympathy is also painful, in how he watches Yin Yu pushed to his limits, desperately asking people to stop because he can't take it anymore, because Xie Lian, well... he's been there
.

Overall, this was an excellent volume. Loved it. Looking forward to the next! ( )
