"A promising new literary voice." -Kirkus Reviews For aspiring indie filmmaker Kevin Stacey, it's another day on the set of his first film, but when his estranged father, a failed Hollywood actor, arrives unexpectedly with a bundle of cash, a gun, and a stolen capuchin monkey, he's propelled toward the journey that will change his life. The monkey, Henry, has been liberated from a research lab by animal rights activists. Inspired by his friend Veronica to reevaluate his relationship with other species, Kevin learns about the pain and suffering inflicted on lab animals as he forges a bond with the capuchin. When father and son embark on a road trip with Henry, Kevin is caught between the egocentric father who abandoned him and the temperamental monkey whose fate is in his hands. With both the FBI and his mother's ghost watching, will Kevin risk his career and his father's freedom to bring the stolen monkey to safety? Meanwhile, Veronica's encounter with an eccentric Catholic priest triggers her own journey toward change. A heartbreaking yet comic family drama, A Better Heart examines the human-animal bond and the bonds between fathers and sons, challenging readers to explore their beliefs about the treatment of non-human species.… (meer)

This was a very entertaining and enjoyable read. Kevin’s father returns home with a monkey that has been freed from a laboratory. The only problem is the FBI are now involved and wants them to help them in a sting operation. I would recommend this book to everyone. Warning it may get you to decide on becoming a vegetarian. I received a free book and the views and opinions are my own. ( )

Very clever way for the author to expose readers to some of the animal suffering that occurs in the name of "science," meat processing and in product testing. He wrote an engaging story that weaves the subject into the story line without being preachy.

A budding indie film director's life is turned upside down when his absentee father enters his life accompanied by a monkey who has been rescued from a lab. He must wrestle with his conscience over whether the monkey is the lab's property or whether he is worthy of protection in his own right, as well as confronting his own conflicting feelings toward his father. A Better Heart by Chuck Augello is devastating, funny and heartbreaking all in one! The things people are willing to do to an animal is just appalling. The one thing that I really enjoyed was how realistic the characters and events felt! I really enjoyed all of the characters! I think most people will the author had made the characters easy to realate to in many different ways. And yes I'm talking about Henry the monkey as well! I enjoyed the book! It touches on a subject that should have more light shined on it but it also has heartwarming and laugh out loud moments! And Chuck Augello does a wonderful job balancing them!

I DON'T THINK THAT I WILL EVER EAT MEAT AFTER READING A BETTER HEART, AND LEARNING HOW ANIMALS ARE TREATED! I did enjoy Kevin's and his wayward excuse of a father who always wanted to make it big in Hollywood instead of playing a corpse or a ten second headshot and help his wife instead of staying away. His dad had enter the home that he once lived in with a Capuchin monkey who had been abused in a Utah laboratory and it just broke my heart that "IN THE NAME OF SCIENCE" justified the monkey's two bolts on his head. I did like that Kevin bonded with Henry, the little monkey and tried to do the right thing that got him major trouble! ( )

Indie filmmaker Kevin Stacey’s life is turned upside-down when his absent father suddenly turns up at his door with a new wife and a capuchin monkey in tow.

The monkey it seems was stolen from a vivisection lab and is on the FBI’s most wanted list.

Told in two separate time periods from the points of view of Kevin and his girlfriend this has an interesting plot and is well written and easy to read. The main characters are nicely rounded and you find yourself rooting for them.

There are a couple of plot points that seem superfluous to the overall story (pregnancy & cat-woman) but they don’t detract from the storytelling.

Written with a clear anti-vivisection message the author blends this with an interesting father/son bonding theme that moves along at a good pace and holds the readers interest right to the end ( )
