In one month, Aoife Cascade will turn twenty and take her seat on the Council of Cregah, an honor she's been preparing for her whole life. But when she lets a secret slip to her mother with devastating consequences, all her plans for the future crumble. Believing her people to be better off without her, she flees Cregah, stowing away aboard a pirate ship bound for dangerous waters. Captain Declan McCallagh is young compared to the pirate lords, but after twelve years on the grueling sea, he has earned a well-respected ship and the attention of the lords, who'd like nothing better than to see his ruin. All he wants is to leave the Aisling Sea--and his past--behind him. But when his sister demands he find the enchanted dagger her rebel faction needs to overthrow the ruling Council, he'll have to decide whether to cast off all family ties or take the perilous voyage to waters guarded by sirens, only passable with the help of the last remaining fae, currently imprisoned by the Council. With murder and betrayal at every turn, can Aoife and Declan learn to rely on one another? Or will the secrets they carry destroy their people--and each other?… (meer)

He doesn't mind killing people... he just prefers to do it on his own terms.

But the pirates have no say in who they kill on this island.

The council orders. The pirates obey.

This arrangement has kept Declan from setting foot on these shores for years... until a bit of bad luck forces him to return.

But it may prove a lucrative stop, if the rebel's information is true.

Find the dagger. Escape this life.

But only if this damn stowaway doesn't ruin everything first.

Lani and her sister, Aoife are soon to be member of an elite Council and will soon have a grand party welcoming them. Lani entrusts Aiofe with a secret. However, Aoife tells their mother that secret leading her to betraying her sister. Their mother exiles Lani from the island and Aoife goes on the run, stowing away on a pirate’s ship. Meanwhile Declan is the captain of said pirate ship. His sister asks for his help on acquiring an enchanted dagger and needs Aoife’s help in breaking into the Council to talk to three Fae sisters who know where the dagger is being kept. This book had it all for me - pirates, sarcasm, humor, and a character who grows all while adventure is happening around her. The cover and synopsis are what initially drew me to this book, the rich storyline and character development is what made me fall in love with it. Though there’s a bombshell Vanessa dropped near the end of book which took me by complete surprise, I didn’t want this book to end. I couldn’t put this down. Though there is a cliffhanger (next book is out in August), I am highly anticipating the next two books in the series. Highly recommend this book! ( )
