Ocean Vuong is een fenomeen. Op aarde schitteren we even, zijn eerste roman, werd een gigantisch verkoopsucces en kreeg ook lovende recensies. Ook van mij. En toch zie ik me het niet
gauw herlezen. Omdat het verschrikkelijk rauw, hard en pijnlijk is.
Dat is De tijd is een moeder ook, maar op een andere manier. Omdat het poëzie is? Maken die witruimtes het verteerbaarder, geven ze meer ademruimte, zuurstof, licht? Langs de andere kant is het nog intenser, gebalder en kan elk woord, elke letter meer binnekomen, je raken.
Qua ruwheid en rauwheid en ook qua vorm (soms dagboekachtig, wisselend tussen gedicht en een prozatekst) doet deze bundel me soms aan Eileen Myles denken. Hen schuwt ook geen taboes. Het heeft ook de intensheid van Tommy Shelby (Peaky Blinders), zijn ‘already broken’. Kogels, bloed, geweld worden niet geschuwd. In het geval van Vuong voortkomend uit de Vietnamoorlog. Oorlog tekent mensen, generaties lang.
De tijd is een moeder is een eerbetoon aan een moeder, vol rouw en verlies maar het zindert ook van leven, intens leven. Er straalt hoop en licht uit.
Ik heb enorm veel onderlijnd en ben van plan nog vaak naar deze pagina’s terug te keren. Een prachtige bundel die je raakt als een mokerslag. (
