I only read it because I had the chance to score a lovely hundred year old first edition of the first English translations of these plays and I had vaguely heard that Ibsen was important. But these are actually great reading. Historical dramas about Vikings and medieval Norse guys. The Pretenders is mostly just a pretty sound historical drama but the act three climax is magnificent. Vikings is great all the way through. Like it says in the title, you get vikings, and the play is just a non-stop parade of them Owning each other. It's really fascinating for the way it presents a *lethally* toxic masculinity, raises conventional modern sensibilities as an alternative, and then undermines them as valid in favor of this weird (Kierkegaard-influenced?) idea of anti-altruistic individual fulfillment that seems to harmonize okay with Viking ethics despite those having been very clearly and straightforwardly presented as completely batshit and wrong? Also the character of Hiordis is exactly the kind of female character certain people love to see. ( ) geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

Henrik Ibsen wrote the following of his 1857 drama, 'The Vikings at Helgeland': "It was in the Icelandic family sagas that I found, in full measure, what I needed of human covering for the moods, ideas and thoughts of which I was full at that time, or of which I had at any rate a more or less clear idea. Up till then I had been ignorant, indeed hardly heard of, these ancient Nordic literary contributions to the history of the people of our saga times. By chance I got hold of N. M. Petersen's excellent translation - excellent at least as regards the tone of the language. In these family chronicles with their various relationships and episodes between man and woman, woman and woman, altogether between human being and human being, I was met by lives of personal, rich, living content; and it was in living together with all these single, individual, personal women and men that the first raw, vague draft of 'The Vikings at Helgeland' arose."
