Zelden heb ik een boek gelezen die zoveel empatische kracht koppelt aan zoveel begrip en rigoureus naslagwerk over depressie, wellicht de 'ziekte' van de éénentwintigste eeuw. Andrew Solomon, een literatuurwetenschapper die zelf heel zware depressies doorleefde is wellicht het best geplaatst om de lezer in te wijden in een menselijk fenomeen waar weinigen openhartige bekentenissen over willen verstrekken, maar waarover velen een mening hebben. Met een heel open pen omschrijft hij zijn eigen helletocht over meerdere hoofdstukken in een nauwelijks verbloemde taal. Maar de scope van dit boek is veel breder dan de titel alleen al doet vermoeden; Gaandeweg ontwikkelt het zich tot een min of meer volledig compendium van het fenomeen gebaseerd op veel medische literatuur en fieldresearch. De auteur is duidelijk gewonnen voor de lenigende kracht van talloze antidepressiva. In zijn zoektocht naar verklaringen voor een depressieve attitude gaat hij geen enkele taboe uit de weg; suïcidale neigingen, automutilatie, armoede en drugs worden in evenzovele hoofdstukken behandeld in een warm-empatische geestesgesteldheid van de ervaringsdeskundige. Het boek krijgt zelfs een sociologisch-adviserende dimensie in de laatste hoofdstukken als politiek-economische aspecten verbonden aan het fenomeen aan bod komen. O.a. boeiend om lezen is het hoofdstuk over de geschiedenis van depressie. De Griekse medische praktijk was reeds gebaseerd op de theorie van de vier lichaamssappen die het karakter een bepalende plooi verlenen: slijm (flegmatici), gele gal (cholerici), bloed (sanguinici) en zwarte gal (melancholici). Vooral deze laatste categorie, m.n. de melancholici, zijn zeer gevoelig voor wisselende stemmingen; de middeleeuwse term Acedia (in de dertiende eeuw vertaald als ledigheid), het zestiende eeuwse Hamlet-dilemma, Robert Burton's beroemde boek "The Anatomy of Melancholy"(1638), het zijn evenzovele mijlpalen in de studie naar het zelfkwellende bewustzijn van melancholici die dikwijls balanceren tussen waan en rede. De 18de eeuwse Romantiek was wellicht de enige periode waar melancholische neigingen werden beschouwd als een diepdoorvoeld inzicht in de menselijke conditie, meestal gelinkt aan artistiek bevlogen zielen met "Weltschmerz". Nadien wordt kort uitgeweid over Kierkegaard en Schopenhauer om tenslotte in de twintigste eeuw te belanden bij de psychoanalytische en psychobiologische ontwikkelingen, gefundeerd door Sigmund Freud en Emil Kraepelin. Antidepressiva veroorzaken een totale omwenteling in de behandeling van geesteszieken sinds hun ontdekking in de jaren '50 van vorige eeuw. ( )
''The Noonday Demon'' is a considerable accomplishment. It is likely to provoke discussion and controversy, and its generous assortment of voices, from the pathological to the philosophical, makes for rich, variegated reading. Solomon leaves us with the enigmatic statement that ''depression seems to be a peculiar assortment of conditions for which there are no evident boundaries'' -- exactly like life.
Depression is a country that the undepressed can't enter, but Solomon, who has travelled there and knows it well, bends all his energy and talent as a writer to sending us snapshots from this terrifying land (mood, he writes, 'is a frontier like deep ocean or deep space'). The result is scary but far from dispiriting; at times, Solomon's voice, calling to us from beyond the frontier, achieves a lonely rapture.
