I loved seeing how Thrawn started out before his time with the Empire. It's cool to see him be not as competent as he is in the future. The military stuff was a bit hard to understand, but it was still fun to read. I'm looking forward to reading the next book. 9/10 - September 30, 2023 ( ) A new chapter in the saga of Thrawn .... though just a start, and a terrific one, at that, to the pre-history of the Grand Admiral. In Thrawn, Zahn has created a character who is part Sherlock Holmes, and part Miles Vorkosigan ... I'm reminded also of Asimov's Foundation trilogy, with the aspects of culture and history that come out in the Chiss society. I look forward to the next volume!! [Re-read - listened to - audio book] “There’s your canvas. Paint me something.” I love Thrawn, I love learning more about him and the Chiss, and I loved seeing this younger version of him. Here, less experienced and amid his own people, Thrawn is more relaxed and easy-going than in his imperial years. It's great to finally see him making mistakes and stumbling in his plans, as well as his progression from wanting to aid other races as much as he can to eventually the relentless grand admiral we already met! That being said, the book doesn't have as much of a plot other than an exposition of the Ascendacy and Thrawn's origin history. Is certainly interesting for his fans, and the Chiss culture made me curious for more, but overall not an thrilling narrative by itself. In Star Wars: Thrawn Ascendancy: Chaos Rising, Timothy Zahn goes to the earliest days of Thrawn’s military career in the Chiss Ascendancy, focusing on his early victories and the friendships he forged with Admiral Ar’alani, former sky-walker Thalias, and current sky-walker Che’ri. The story, set concurrently with the Clone Wars in Republic space, explores the workings and political machinations of the Chiss Ascendancy as well as their policies in regard to neighboring systems and factions in the Chaos. As the first novel in a new series, Thrawn Ascendancy: Chaos Rising may be read on its own, though readers familiar with Zahn’s later canonical Thrawn novels will see the beginnings of events that led Thrawn to defect to the Empire. The book also recalls the Thrawn of Legends books, such as Heir to the Empire. A great novel for Star Wars fans that expands the Star Wars galaxy while returning to a fan-favorite character. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
