Tedious conspiracy thriller where internal affairs cop Jack McNeal investigates his estranged investigative journalist wife's suspicious death. On top of being far-fetched in the ease with which he evades the villains and dispatches them, it ends without resolving the major plot thread about who ordered his wife's death. My thanks to the Author publisher's and NetGalley for providing me with a Kindle version of this book to read and honestly review. Well written clever gripping thriller from start to disappointing finish, featuring occasional gruesome violence, with conspiracy in the highest places and excellent engaging characters. So why only four stars it's down to that strange ending, which I can only assume is due to a possible second book. This is a new Author to me but I will look to read more in future. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
Onderdeel van de reeks(en)Jack McNeal (1)
From the author of the bestselling Jon Reznick Thriller series comes an exhilarating new adventure. When the people he loves most are in danger, Jack McNeal will get revenge...or die trying. NYPD detective Jack McNeal is used to asking the tough questions. But a late-night visit from the Secret Service lands Jack on the other side of the table--as a suspect in the disappearance of his estranged wife, Caroline, a prominent reporter on the White House beat. When her body is found floating in the Potomac, Jack is overcome by disbelief and despair. Her death seems eerily similar to the suspicious fatality of a young socialite years before. Is the similarity of the two tragic incidents simply a coincidence, or could it be a sign of a murderous orchestrated plot to protect those in the highest echelons of the American government? To avenge Caroline's death, Jack embarks on a journey into the darkest recesses of power. Suspects abound--from haunted Special Forces soldiers to ex-CIA to the president's own body man. Along the way, Jack will be forced to decide: Is there a line he won't cross to expose the killer? Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |

The Pluses:
*Jack McNeal does have character growth as the book progresses. I don't agree with all his choices that lead to that growth, but he does come away with a better understanding for some of the people he'll be investigating (if he stays with IA).
*The McNeal family seems close and judging by the number of people they can ask for favors, they must have something going for them.
*It seems that Jack might be willing to grieve and/or explore his grief for both his son and his wife by the end of the book.
The Minuses:
*Jack McNeal becomes a vigilante of sorts. I don't agree with all the actions he chooses to take.
*The language leaves a lot to be desired. Quite a bit of swearing.
*Jack (and perhaps other characters) turn to drinking as a way to numb their pain or to feel better--never a good thing when it's done long-term.
*A dog gets killed for no reason other than to make a point. ( )
