As a fan of science fiction and fantasy, I found “Hive” by Mickey Hadick to be a compelling read that taps into the classic dystopian themes with a modern twist. The story is set in a post-apocalyptic world where humanity clings to survival in a hive-like city, governed by a corporation with an iron grip. The protagonist, Leah, is a character that resonates with the reader; her struggle against the oppressive regime is both personal and universal. Hadick does an excellent job of building a believable world that’s both fascinating and terrifying. The narrative explores the consequences of a society under constant surveillance by an artificial intelligence that dictates the terms of existence. The tension between the desire for freedom and the illusion of safety is palpable throughout the book. The relationship between Leah and Abel adds a human touch to the otherwise bleak setting, providing a glimmer of hope in the darkness.
The pacing of the story is just right, keeping you engaged without overwhelming you with too much action or technical jargon. It’s a story that makes you think about the direction our world is heading and the choices we might have to make in the future.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! There were a (very) few typos, but they did not get in the way of building this dystopian world in my imagination. This book is perfect for anyone who, like me, loves a low-key love story set in an apocalyptic and/or dystopian time and place. I was ecstatic then heartbroken for Leah as she navigates the terrain. I’m left with questions and hope to get to read the next in this series, too!

The Corporation or the Collective, to opt-in or opt-out, New Town or Old Town, are some of the choices facing Abel and Leah in this dystopian novel of the near future. The two teenagers are confronted with the quick and final judgment if you vary from what is expected of you as normal behavior. They are expected to attend church services, which turn out to be nothing more than Las Vegas-like entertainment. They can’t very in voice patterns, movements, or speech without incurring the suspicion of the AI. The AI interprets these things and can summarily pass judgment on the individual who deviates from the expected without human intervention. Their families are high up in the corporation, so they are watched more closely. The two eventually conspire to escape the rigidity of New Town to somewhere in Old Town, which still has a semblance of the old way before the corporation took over.
There are some interesting side plots, and as the story unfolds, the history of why the corporation is in power with no government oversight. It is an exciting read and I would recommend it to any. ( )
