Je hebt protestromans, geëngageerde romans, die gaan voor de duidelijk boodschap: de openlijke terechtwijzing van bepaalde politieke systemen, bepaalde verhoudingen van onrechtvaardigheid, discriminatie, of regelrechte terreur. En dan heb je een boek als dit, dat wel duidelijk verworteld is in een moraliserend verhaal (namelijk tegen het apartheidssysteem), maar dat tegelijk een veel subtielere en vooral veel bredere boodschap geeft en niks minder dan het menselijk te kort blootlegt. Coetzee gebruikt daarvoor als hoofdpersoon Michaël K., een "simpele" kleurling die in Kaapstad woont en tuinman is voor de stad. Op de achtergrond is een burgeroorlog aan de gang die regelmatig het gewone leven ontreddert. Michaël is simpel in die zin dat hij door anderen als simpel wordt gezien, hij is geboren met een hazenlip, is opgegroeid in een jeugdinstelling, maar leeft nu met zijn moeder. Die moeder wordt ziek, voelt haar einde naderen en wil naar haar geboortegrond terugkeren. Daarmee zijn al meteen 4 sterke literaire verwijzingen gegeven: de K. in de naam van het hoofdpersonage verwijst duidelijk naar Kafka (heel de roman ademt de sfeer van Het Slot), de tocht van Michaël met zijn moeder, en later op zijn eentje, kan je niet anders dan als een odyssee zien, waarbij Michaël meer en meer te vergelijken is met Elckerlyc (Peer Gynt of andere modellen), en tenslotte is er het tuinmotief waarmee je onvermijdelijk bij Candide van Voltaire terecht komt. Coetzee geeft dit materiaal een heel eigen invulling: Michaël is in de ogen van bijna alle anderen een idioot, hij worstelt met structuren en menselijke verhoudingen waar hij niks van snapt, hij zoekt naar een manier om recht te blijven staan tegenover het leven en ook (want ook dat is een sterk thema) tegenover de tijd. En zonder dat je het als lezer zelf beseft, groeit dit wandelend skelet (dat hij op het einde is) uit tot een icoon van menselijkheid. Ik zou daar nog veel meer aan kunnen toevoegen, maar dan vergal ik - vrees ik - je leesplezier. Coetzee blijft me verbazen! ( )
Coetzee is voor mij de beste schrijver die ik ook las. Zijn stijl is nauwgezet en het verhaal komt dicht op je huid. Dat kan Coetzee als geen ander, een verhaal schrijven dat al je zintuigen raakt. Deze roman heeft voor mij een heldere en in de kern diep optimistische boodschap: je kunt alles verliezen en dat gebeurt soms ook, maar je kunt altijd weer opnieuw beginnen, met niets, met een krom lepeltje waarme je wat water uit een bron schept. But in spite of such pleasures, I have serious doubts. My main concern is Michael K himself. He's more of a plot device than a real man, and we are constantly reminded how simple Michael is, and how little he understands .
And so J.M. Coetzee has written a marvelous work that leaves nothing unsaid—and could not be better said—about what human beings do to fellow human beings in South Africa; but he does not recognize what the victims, seeing themselves as victims no longer, have done, are doing, and believe they must do for themselves. Does this prevent his from being a great novel? My instinct is to say a vehement "No." But the organicism that George Lukács defines as the integral relation between private and social destiny is distorted here more than is allowed for by the subjectivity that is in every writer. The exclusion is a central one that may eat out the heart of the work's unity of art and life.
