The story picks up where All of Us Villains left off and it’s an immediate immersive fast paced frenzy to the finish. So many surprises, so many battles, so much action the story doesn’t let you pause for a second. There are even a few romantic moments in between all the spell casting. Super fun ride with such great fully fleshed out characters. I did get choked up a bunch of times as everything unfolded. Much like after the first book, I will be thinking about this one for a while. I called the first book in this duology a goth magical Hunger Games, and authors Foody and Herman bring us more of the same spooky-come-murderous vibes as the tournament continues. After the events which began to break the Tournament apart, our Champions begin to draw sides and make unexpected alliances in their bids for life. Well, maybe not all of them figure they’ll live, but at least they’ll go out fighting. Ironically, while the story in this volume definitely utilises much of the magic-driven action that had me hooked in the first book, there is a definite shift to focus more on character development among the group of protagonists. Though they are fighting for their lives, these teenagers wind up facing the same challenges as their non-magical peers - learning who to trust, building their knowledge, and questioning who they like - which makes for some pretty entertaining (if typical) storytelling as the Blood Veil disintegrates and the stakes get ever higher. Even though the story wraps up nicely and there’s plenty of engaging narration to get us there, I found that I was a bit bored as I was reading. Maybe I’ve read enough stories of the like to figure out the ending, or maybe this was just the wrong time to pick the book up, but very little surprised me or kept me truly fascinated by the story - though I will continue to give it high points for style! geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

I loved the first book (All of Us Villains) and so I was worried I was going to hype myself up too much for this book and not enjoy it as much....I did not overhype myself and I loved this one just as much! It wraps up really well and there aren't any loose ends but I don't want to be done with this world and these characters, I am so sad it is over! I am so so glad that these two authors are collaborating on another series together even if we do have to wait 2 years....
I was also worried that since I read the first book and I was listening to the second it wouldn't be the same but both of the narrators were amazing! They added so much to this book from their speaking speed and volume to really get you in the mood the scene is portraying. The male narrator really brought out the sound of the villain for the guys POV chapters he did and they were both excellent at the different tones of voice the characters were speaking in.
I haven't had a book hangover in a long time...but this one got me. Maybe I will have to listen to the first book now as well....and read the second book...just to make sure I get the full experience.... ( )
