"Combines wonderful characters and history to create a story that will make you want to dive right in!" JERRY CRAFT, author of the Newbery Medal-winning New Kid A splashy, contemporary middle grade graphic novel from bestselling comics creator Johnnie Christmas! Bree can't wait for her first day at her new middle school, Enith Brigitha, home to the Mighty Manatees--until she's stuck with the only elective that fits her schedule, the dreaded Swim 101. The thought of swimming makes Bree more than a little queasy, yet she's forced to dive headfirst into one of her greatest fears. Lucky for her, Etta, an elderly occupant of her apartment building and former swim team captain, is willing to help. With Etta's training and a lot of hard work, Bree suddenly finds her swim-crazed community counting on her to turn the school's failing team around. But that's easier said than done, especially when their rival, the prestigious Holyoke Prep, has everything they need to leave the Mighty Manatees in their wake. Can Bree defy the odds and guide her team to a state championship, or have the Manatees swum their last lap--for good? Praise for SWIM TEAM: "A revelation! You'll root for Swim Team--the water is just right." --JOHN JENNINGS, New York Times bestselling and Eisner Award-winning creator "Swim Team is a beautiful story about trying new things. Johnnie Christmas is a fantastic storyteller and artist." --KAZU KIBUISHI, author of Amulet "Full of charm, heart, and pulse-pounding races. A winner!" --GENE LUEN YANG, author of American Born Chinese and Dragon Hoops… (meer)

The pacing definitely could have been more gradual with Bree’s swimming progress, to go from not knowing how to swim to suddenly adept at all the strokes stretched plausibility a bit, though I guess there’s always the possibility that she’s some sort of rare prodigy. I just think it may have been good to slow down a touch and really show more of the work this girl and any other competitive swimmer would have to put in to become great, especially when you’re writing to a young audience who may become discouraged if they aren’t able to master the sport as quickly as Bree does.

Right from the opening I really loved the father/daughter relationship, so I was kind of disappointed that it ultimately received less focus than the infighting on the swim team and the reunion of another swim team, obviously there’s nothing wrong with a story promoting team work, but I felt like there was more to be emotionally mined from dad and daughter than any of the team drama.

The illustrations here were such a standout, particularly panels involving water, the movement in those scenes and the vibrant colors just so beautifully brought this book to life. ( )

children's graphic fiction (3rd-6th grade) - new school, friendship, anxiety, teamwork, with a mini lesson on how segregation and race-based policies have contributed to some Black people's discomfort around pools and swimming.

Bree moves from New York to Florida with her dad (who has taken on two new jobs there) and deals with anxiety (about not knowing how to swim), rocky friendships, missing her dad, and bullying when she joins her new school's swim team and figures out how to make her teammates support each other as a team. Everything works out wonderfully in the end, which is maybe less realistic, but the positive spirit is appreciated. ( )

It's a good book. There is a plot hole that bothers me (why does Ms. Etta really need to reunite with her team?), and I personally find the illustrations weirdly stylized (the faces remind me of vintage dolls). For no good reason, I feel kinda meh about it. ( )

Bree and her dad, who are Black, move from Brooklyn to Florida. Bree misses her friends but is excited to start her new school and join the math puzzles elective - but she gets stuck with swimming 101 instead. Bree never learned how to swim, but can't admit it to her coach, so she keeps skipping class, and gets in trouble. When she falls into the pool in the apartment complex, neighbor Ms. Etta saves her, then teaches her to swim: Ms. Etta was on the school team that very nearly won, and she agrees to help the Enith Brigitha swim team now, including Bree and her friend Clara. Can the underfunded Mighty Manatees beat hoity-toity Holyoke Prep, and save their swimming program? If they work as a team, they can.

Quotes

"Then why can't so many of my friends swim?"
"Well...that's where it gets complicated." (Bree and Ms. Etta, 81, followed by a brief history of racism and swimming pools and beaches in the U.S.)

"Teammates argue sometimes. But if you stick together, you won't fall apart." (Ms. Etta, 183) ( )
