"Up until 1968, if you suffered a medical crisis, your chances of survival were minimal. That all changed with the Freedom House EMS in Pittsburgh, a group of Black men who became America's first paramedics and set the gold standard for emergency medicine around the world, only to have their legacy erased-until now. Born from the vision of a Nobel Prize-nominated physician, the needs of a country in pain, and the ashes of Pittsburgh's downturn in the 1960s, Freedom House brought together a group of young, uneducated Black men to forge a new frontier in health care. Their job was grueling, the rules made up as they went along, and their mandate nearly impossible: prove to a skeptical public and the politicians that paramedics were a noble and valuable endeavor and, most importantly, that they themselves were worthy professionals performing a crucial public service. Despite the long odds and attempts to shut them down, they succeeded spectacularly. In American Sirens, acclaimed journalist and paramedic Kevin Hazzard tells a dramatic story of heroes and villains, of brutal attempts to stifle hope, and the resilience of a community that fought back. He follows a rich cast of characters that includes John Moon, an orphan who found his calling as a paramedic; Peter Safar, the Nobel Prize-nominated physician who invented CPR and realized his vision for a trained ambulance service; and Nancy Caroline, the idealistic young doctor young doctor who turned a scrappy team into an international leader. At every turn they battled racism-from the community, the police, and the government. Never-before revealed in full, this is a rich and troubling hidden history of the Black origins of America's paramedics, a special band of dedicated essential workers, who stand ready to serve day and night on the line between life and death for every one of us"--… (meer)

Report from Engine Co. 82 door Dennis Smith (estone07)
estone07: "American Sirens" and "Report From Engine Company 82" both tell stories of their respective emergency services in the latter half of the 20th century. Each looks at a period of time where the books respective service became what we know and recognize today. I am a firefighter and a paramedic and firmly believe that each book should be required reading for newcomers to the field.… (meer)

So fascinating and frustrating, how poorly the first paramedics were treated (mostly due to their being Black) and how hard the city fought to kill the paramedic program. It's hard to believe how recent full service ambulances are. Also, thank goodness for CPR but who in the world allowed that experiment to go forward?! ( )

Fascinating account of how the paramedic system developed, and the Black men of Pittsburgh who were its first heroes. I want all my injury prevention colleagues to read it! ( )

Narrated by Gilbert Glenn Brown. An absolutely riveting and important account about the world's first paramedics--all of them Black American men. This is a fascinating intersection of people with intriguing backgrounds: the doctor who invented CPR, the non-profit organization that literally recruited men off the street, the men who survived a rigorous training in emergency medicine, and the woman who wrote the EMS textbook still in use today. Throw in the racism of the 1960s-70s, the skepticism of doctors and police, and the obstructionism of Pittsburgh government, and you have a literal medical miracle with an eternal legacy. Brown's compelling narration puts listeners in the middle of the action and the challenges of the era. You will not forget this piece of history. ( )

A complete look at the infancy of emergency medical services. Hazzard exposes a tale that every paramedic in America should know, but that was swept away in the turmoil of the 1970s. "American Sirens" is to EMS as "Report From Engine Company 82" is to the fire service: a stunningly well-written look at the early days, and essential reading for anyone in the field. ( )

nonfiction, historical-places-events, history, history-and-culture, Black African American-history, 20th-century-medical-history, trauma, PTSD, paramedics, biographies*****

Couldn't be totally clueless about the matters exposed in this book as I am a retired RN (class of 1968) who worked the inner city in hospital and jails until 2011.
This documentary exposes the depth of profiling and discrimination with its inevitable results and especially as evidenced in medical care. It also exposes the kind of class distinctions prevalent in the medical community which has lessened a bit over the years. The reader is immersed in a few important biographies as well as the origin and development of the trauma care system now existent in cities and some rural areas. Everyone needs to experience this book!
I requested and received a free temporary e-book copy from Hachette Books via NetGalley. Thank you!
Then I bought the audio. Gilbert Glenn Brown is the perfect voice actor for this narration ( )
