I enjoyed the strong female lead. I felt like some of the historical stuff may have been less accurate, but couldn't be sure to be honest. Perfectly light and enjoyable. ( )

This was a great beach read — not that it is a flighty book (though it is, in a sense, as it's about aviation), but because it's well-written without too much drama and is broken into short chapters, making it easy to stop reading and pick up again.

I like learning new things and this historical fiction book gave me the chance to better understand flying planes (in general and in the early 1940s in particular) along with training pigeons to take messages.

There's a bit of everything in here: tragedy, grief, discrimination against women, betrayal, friendship, romance, mental illness, thinking positive, following your dreams, risks.

While it is carefully researched, sometimes the present day crept in, as when a character says, "meh" or "whatever" (as a sarcastic slang word). Neither entered our vocabulary until the 1990s.

Overall, I really enjoyed the book and look forward to D.M. Mahoney's next novel. ( )

I really liked this story. It is historical fiction and so not all pieces may be accurate; but that allows for inventiveness in telling the stories of so many like Frances; Women attempting to find their place in a country that does not value them for all they are and can be and also of the difficult paths we must sometimes take in order to find or discover ourselves. The book was fairly easy to read, flowing nicely and keeping my interest. It wasn’t one that I “couldn’t put down”, but definitely one I enjoyed. ( )

Great WWII fiction. It was a little slow starting but got very interesting once Frances left home for New Jersey. Her love of flying was evident. I enjoyed the book. I thought it was well written for a first book by this author. ( )

I received this book as part of the LibraryThing EarlyReviewer program. I was just not able to get into it, and did not finish. I was confused by the presence of a passenger pigeon in 1941, when the last known one died in 1914, causing the species to be extinct. I think that was discussed in the book? But it really threw me because I honestly couldn't tell if the author/publisher just didn't know. The writing may be accurate about the flying of planes, but the romance novel part of it was pretty basic and kindof overdone. ( )
