The Flaws of Gravity is a solidly written Urban Fantasy with a beautifully, eye-catching cover.

For being (I assume) a debut book, Caye has proven to have a great writing flow. There were never any clunky parts to wade through and the story felt like it built piece by piece instead of being dumped on the reader right from the get go.

Jude is a strong and sassy FMC. Her lines of right and wrong seem to be just a little blurred, as such she makes some questionably rude remarks. I absolutely loved her. She fits perfectly into the world Caye has created. And her ability to essentially wield gravity is so fun and unique!

If you're looking for a fast-paced, action-packed story with a sprinkling of romance, I recommend giving this story a try!

Big thank you to Stephanie Caye via LibraryThing for the finished copy to read and honestly review! ( )

While I found the concept represented here of the Fay and pocket dimensions, etc. fun and new, I thought the story was so-so. Not a ton of character depth - I never got why I should like Jude, or why so many others really hated her, for example. Her manipulation of gravity was cool, though. ( )

Jude is a half-Faerie woman who can manipulate gravity around herself and who has been recruited by the Consilium into a long-running cold war with the Court and then by another half-Faerie to obtain magic that neither group wants him to have. Actions she takes getting said magic anger the other half-Faerie to the point that he attacks her and leaves her in a coma for three months. When she recovers, she’s spirited out of the hospital by a group of Faeries, learns that both the Consilium and the Court were mostly destroyed while she was unconscious, and gets dragged back into the conflict between the Faeries, a remnant of the Consilium led by someone she betrayed and seriously injured while obtaining the magic before, and the other half-Faerie and his allies. While Jude does want revenge on the other half-Faerie, she doesn’t really trust either of the other groups (a feeling which is often mutual, especially with members of the Consilium remnant) and mostly just wants to get out of this whole mess.

On the whole, I liked the book. It’s a relatively light read that can probably be finished in a few hours, with a clear writing style that tends to venture into the somewhat cynical when the chapter is told from Jude’s viewpoint. While the style is straightforward, the morality is anything but simplistic; one of the three factions are reasonably clearly the “bad guys,” but neither of the other two could be called the “good guys.” This extends even more firmly into the individuals we actually meet, with alliances shifting based on people’s self-interests in ways that make perfect sense for them; only one or two characters feel like actual bad guys, and they have understandable motives, while I’d be even more hesitant about calling anyone an unambiguous good guy.

I did feel the need to lower my rating by a half star because the beginning felt too much like it was the sequel to a book that doesn’t exist, with too many unexplained details that might help the reader care about the events of the first few chapters. Once one gets through that and starts to learn who various people and groups are, things improve quite a bit.

While the story is complete here, there are enough loose ends that the author could do a sequel if she chooses. If she does, I’ll probably be on board. If she does something else entirely, I’ll at least be willing to see what it is. ( )

Synopsis: Three entities want Jude to use her powers for them, but none is particularly concerned about the health and welfare of this half-Faerie. And once she retrieves the things they want, will they destroy humankind? The two men she might love don’t make her life or her decisions easier. Do they really value her, or is she just a means to an end? All Jude knows for sure is ‘Faeries lie’; but so does everyone else, it seems.
Review: This was an excellent book. The characters are complex, the story lines are masterfully interwoven, and the outcome does not rely on an unlikely intervention. I hope this is the first of many stories that are set in this universe with these personalities. ( )

The Flaws of Gravity is a fast paced, action packed fantasy. If you like books with supernatural intrigue, this one will be right up your alley! The world-building here d reminded me of Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden series as well as Kim Harrison's Hollows series, with a fresh new spin. I enjoyed the world that was created in this novel, and it would be a great springboard for more stories. My only criticism is that the POV from first person to third person with changes in POV characters, which made my reading experience a little choppy between chapters. Well worth your time if you are a paranormal fantasy who likes a fast moving thriller. I look forward to more from this author. ( )
