1926 When Lucrezia Romano strides into the hotel in London where Connie Stapleton works, she steals her heart on the spot and, amongst artists and free spirits, the two lovers become enmeshed in a covert world. 1929 Moving to New York, their plans for a life together are soon thwarted as the Wall Street Crash rips the economy apart. Penniless, Connie convinces Lucrezia to return to Italy temporarily while she herself goes back to support her young sister in Ireland. As WWII rages through Europe contact between the two diminishes. Will their love survive the years ahead? 1968 A loud-mouthed New Yorker, Darlene Taylor, arrives in town. Exited at 12%.

There is a lot of "tell rather than show" that is laborious.

And, yes I realize this is about Connie and Lucrezia, but this jumped the shark at this point. Don't want to read about the London homosexual scene or attending drag balls. ( )

I received this book as part of the LibraryThing Early Reviewers program. I tried really hard to get through this book, but I couldn't. I made it about 40% of the way through. It gets good reviews from other reviewers, but maybe this book isn't for me. Each of the first chapters was about a different character, and I couldn't see how the story was connected. I'm sure I didn't give it enough time, and maybe I'll try again someday but for now it was just too much for me to try and wrap my head around. The stories weren't in-depth but the sentence structure was odd, with a lot of 1-word sentences and not well thought out structure.

This novel had many characters intertwined in a meticulous way. From Connie & Lucrezia, Agnes & Norah, Darlene, etc. This was a well-crafted novel of strangers becoming a major part of each other's lives. Well-written. ( )

This is a good read! I had some worries about a story that covered that span of time and covering that much geography. It doesn't go deep into any of characters. She errs on the side of keeping it a little too superficial rather than getting bogged down too much.

Pros: Well written, decently paced, interesting three dimensional characters for the most part.

Cons: We lost some connection to the first set of main characters by the end, which was a sad thing for me. Also, the end seemed to be a little fast and left a few things unresolved in my opinion.

I would have liked to see more of a particular reunion; find out more about Norah's life; see one villain's response/internal response to a particular moment; and lastly the comeuppance of a sister, set of parents, and a son. But I like to see the bad characters suffer. I would have settled just for the reunion.

A good read. Good enough that I will look up her other book to read. ( )

This is a great novel, a story of love and tragedy, of fully committed relationships, of life in the mid-twentieth century, written in a such a unique way, no flannel (embelishment), straight to the point. Three intersecting stories cleverly fabricated into a fascinating book that I found very hard to put down. Fully deserves a rating of 4 stars.

As a LibraryThing reviewer, I received this book for an honest review .
