Doctor Bernard Patten―erstwhile Memory Fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine, founder of the first memory clinic at the Neurological Institute of New York, and author of scientific papers on memory therapy and memory problems―wants to help you to a better mind, a better memory, and, consequently, a better life. Memory degradation happens to everyone. Even people in good health forget where they park their cars or leave their reading glasses. Some draw a blank entering their PIN. Is the stove off? Cat fed? Door locked? Did you take your medication? Not sure? How come? These memory problems only get worse as we get older unless we employ mental exercises to improve memory now. Mountains of scientific research prove that mental exercise benefits the brain as much as physical exercise benefits the body. Mental gymnastics boosts brainpower, augments memory, and (in some cases) actually increases brain size. It can help prevent dementia, mental decline, and the much-feared Alzheimer's disease. Making Mental Might does not aim to increase your IQ or show you how to get smarter. It offers the proper mental training to look, sound, and perform worlds better. These techniques have helped hundreds of students at Rice University's School of Continuing Studies under Doctor Patten improve their working memory. They can do the same for you.… (meer)

A useful book that could have been better formatted. It was not what I expected and seemed quite wordy for this type of book. However, the math tricks promise to be helpful to many. ( )

This is a great book if you enjoy keeping your thinking sharp and healthy. It is thought and cognition that guide my life and I was glad to get some insight into how to achieve this easier. ( )

Making Mental Might by Bernard Michael Patten is a great book and one of the most interesting non-fiction books I have read. Patten guides the reader in learning to improve memory skills. He does ask you to work hard on using his ideas but the time is worth the effort. I tried his suggestions and found it much easier to remember lists and names. His tips on speaking without forgetting your points is very valuable. He discusses remembering playing musical instruments without getting lost. He has a chapter on tricks to be able to answer math problems in your head without using a calculator or pencil and paper. There is much more in this book. It is certainly not a fast read but entertaining all the way through. Patten has a great sense of humor and also encourages the reader to work hard on the problems he asks you to solve. I think very highly of this book and and have purchased several copies to give to my friends. I plan to reread the book. If you read the book you will feel much smarter and be able to impress your friends. ( )

Making Mental Might makes sense. Just as training for a marathon builds the ability to run longer and longer distances, so too will exercising your brain get your brain ready for harder and harder challenges. Want a better memory? Do exercises that will improve your ability to remember things. Want to do maths without pencil paper or calculator, exercise the calculator that is your brain.
That premise is so spectacularly simple, you may wonder, 'why read a book about it when an e-mail would suffice?'
The why is in Doctor Patten's subtitle, "How to Look Ten Times Smarter Than You Are". This book give the nitty gritty HOW to accomplish transforming your brain for better performance.
Excuse me, it's time for my mental push-ups...

I was so excited when I received this book as an Early Reviewer. I love tips and tricks to make things easier. But this book really was a disappointment. Turns out there aren't actually that many tips and tricks to seem smarter. So a big, BIG part of the book was padding. And repetition.
In addition to the very few memory tricks that I already knew, there's a section on Mental Math. That was the only part that I felt I learned something valuable. Something I would want to reread and pass on to my kids to make school easier. So I would say only about 1/6th of the book was of any value to me. ( )
