The main interest is that this was written as soon as the decade had finished and so, it gives a view untainted by hindsight. Levin provides some perspicacious observations of the changes which started in the sixties and now are firmly embedded within our society. It is equally interesting to see those things which he expected to be ephemeral: popular music in particular gets a poor review. Mr L. did not expect the Beatles, rolling Stones et al to be remembered some fifty years later. He also reduces the moon landings to a peripheral position in the decades historical significance. Perhaps one could argue that he was correct in this, little progress has been made since. I was a young lad in the sixties (fifteen when the seventies began) and I remember always being told that I had missed the decade of the century. Certainly the effects of the decade, which still reverberate, were the greatest, but, as I get older, I become less sure that all they introduced was to the benefit of mankind.
Levin's own index to this contemporary history gives full rein to his vigorous opinions.
First published in 1970, The Pendulum Years argues that many of the striking features of the preceding decade stemmed from an underlying tension between the pull of the past and the pull of the future. Coruscating and often hilarious, it is an unparalled examination of epochal times. Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |
