Beautiful and mysterious, this lovingly crafted book may be a little too much of the same as his other book, but it still is absolutely enjoyable. I love the flipping back and forth between written words and the black and white drawings. I also thought that using images to emphasize the silence of the deaf was a well used tool. ( )

In the 1970s, a boy goes in search of his father in New York City after his mother dies. In the 1920s, a deaf girl runs away from home to New York City to escape her unhappy home life. By the end, the two stories are intertwined. Like [b:Hugo Cabret|9673436|The Invention of Hugo Cabret|Brian Selznick|http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51VcEWaqKWL._SL75_.jpg|527941], the story's told in both prose and pictures. The mystery of Ben's father combined with the mystery of how his story will meet up with Rose's really drives the book. I actually raced through the book, so I failed to notice a lot of the neat details in the illustrations that reveal themselves on closer inspection. ( )
