Excellent small town serial killer mystery mixed with commentary on racism and religious fundamentalism from a Black sheriff and many crises of faith. This is so well done and leaves you with plenty to chew on. ( ) Cosby has created a gripping and gruesome story – perhaps a bit too grizzly for some readers of the queasy kind. His masterful writing brings the characters to life in credible and engaging ways – although I could have lived with a slightly smaller cast. As he cunningly builds a story about a Black sheriff in a small southern town that is ravaged by brutal serial killings, Cosby explores race relations, inequities in the criminal justice system and the life-changing impacts on family trauma. It's a well-paced and intriguing read. This is an engaging thriller about a sleepy small town in Virginia, where a man with a gun walks into a school and kills a teacher. It soon becomes clear that there is a serial killer in town, the the Black town sheriff has to track him down. Race plays an important role in the book: the murders reveal some racial tensions and exacerbate others. If you are a sensitive reader, be wary: some of the murders are very gruesome, and there is also a lot of child abuse. This is well-written, the main characters are interesting, the pacing is good, the examination of race is interesting.... but for me, I'm not sure the payoff was worth having all of those gruesome details seared into my brain. I received this book as a winner of a Goodreads giveaway, but that does not reflect my opinions in any way. How do I write a review that can fully encompass the suspense, social commentary, thrill-ride, and emotional roller coaster that is ATSB? This is my first read by S. A. Crosby, and I am a fan! I love when I can vividly picture every character, especially when I can name someone like them. I know these people, even if I’m not from a small town. I felt their pain, fear, joy, skepticism, hate, etc. and appreciate the twists and turns at every page. The chapters are short, but there is no fluff. There are stories within the main story, just as suspenseful as the rest. It read like an Oscar-worthy film that was part true-crime, part thriller, all truth. I’ve never read a book where I felt like it was a true reflection of society vs a good read. This was society at its core. I just am in awe. Please, please, please read this book. It is fiction writing perfected. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
