Fiction. Mystery. Suspense. Thriller. HTML:#1 New York Times bestselling author Kathy Reichs returns with her twenty-second high-stakes thriller featuring forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan who, following a series of bizarre disappearances on the islands of Turks and Caicos, enters a sinister labyrinth in which a new technology may wreak worldwide havoc.
Called in to examine what is left of a person thought to have been struck by lightning, Tempe traces an unusual tattoo to its source and is soon embroiled in a much larger case. Young menā??touristsā??have been disappearing on the islands of Turks and Caicos. Seven years earlier, the first victim was found in a strange location with his left hand hacked off; subsequently, two other visitors vanished without a trace. But, recently, tantalizing leads have emerged and only Tempe can unravel them.

Maddeningly, the victims seem to have nothing in commonā??other than the odd places where their bodies turn up, and the fact that none seems likely to have been involved in criminal activity. Do these attacks have something to do with the islands' seething culture of gang violence? Tempe isn't so sure. Disturbingly, she discovers evidence that what's at stake may actually have global significance.

It isn't long before the sound of a ticking clock grows menacingly loud. Then Tempe herself becomes

Tempe goes off on her own to the Carribean. Several schemes are afloat but she keeps them all in order. The main scheme is far-fetched but it does provide some bad actors. Strangely, we lost a promising character in the first half of the book. The romance is full-speed ahead. ( )

Number 22 in the series, so Iā€™m sure Kathy Reichs can be forgiven if her books are getting to be a little bit formulaic. Iā€™ve read each and everyone and this is the one that just recently came out. I really did enjoy the book. I always like visiting with Tempe and Ryan. I also enjoy the locales where Tempe finds her self. In this particular one is in Turks and Caicosā€˜s when she is on the hunt for a killer that left a dead body in his wake back in Montreal, and he was also missing a hand. A police inspector from Turks and Caicosā€™s calls, Tempe and says that she thinks that she has some dead bodies down in her country that are very similar to the one that Tempe is working on. Tempe, heads down, thinking that it might help solve a few mysteries and she might be able to enjoy a nice little vacation in her busy life. But of course, things never do go as planned in any of these books, and she finds herself deep in a huge conspiracy that actually does appear to be connected to her dead body in Montreal. I did find that the book contained a little too many coincidences, and that kind of put me off a bit, so that is why the three stars. I do enjoy the forensic information that comes out in these books, and I look forward to reading the next one in the series. I did listen to this book on audiobook, and that made it an enjoyable experience. ( )

A man is struck by lightening, maybe... a detective from Turks and Caicos arrives in Canada looking for help with missing persons/ dead persons turning up unexpectedly on the islands known for their hospitality, so Brennan heads to the islands to determine why young handsome men are disappearing and ending up dead. I enjoyed this book. I have been a fan of this series for many years. I havenā€™t read all of the installments just yet but I have picked up most of them. This book takes Temperance out of town to the Turks and Caicos islands. It seems that there is a killer target young attractive men, cutting off one of their hands before disposing of the bodies. Once Tempe gets to the islands, she is drawn into another case that is equally perplexing. I found this novel to be quite the page-turner.

Tempe spent the bulk of this installment working the case of the local detectives. She does spend some time doing forensic anthropology, of course, but I felt like the bulk of the story was set away from the lab. The mysteries kept me guessing and I loved getting to know the characters on the islands. I found the pacing of the book to be well done, although I did feel that the ending seemed a bit rushed. All in all, this was an entertaining mystery.

I would recommend this book to others. This is the twenty-second novel in the long-running Temperance Brennan series but it would work well as a stand-alone since the mystery is completely contained in this book. I cannot wait to read more of this well-written series!

I received a review copy of this book from Scribner. ( )

The Bone Hacker is Kathy Reichs' long running Temperance Brennan series.

For those who haven't listened to this series yet, Tempe is a forensic anthropologist who works with both American and Canadian labs, cases and police forces.

The Bone Hacker finds Tempe examining the remains of a person who has been killed by a lightning strike. Or have they? Her findings may be a link to other cases on the islands of Turks and Caicos.

I have always liked Tempe as a lead character. She's intelligent, tenacious and doesn't back down. Her inner dialogue gives the reader a better sense of 'knowing' her. And it's quite funny at times.

The solving of the cases always fascinates me. In addition to the forensics clues, Tempe's intuitions, skill sets and determination are put to good use.

Taking the setting to a new location also gives us some new supporting players. Two Turks and Caicos police added a lot to this tale.

The case itself is different and led to some answers I hadn't expected when the book started. (And you'll find out where the title comes in!)

The Bone Hacker kept me engrossed from the first chapter to the last. Another great entry in the series, and I'm looking forward to the 23rd.

The reader for the audiobook was Linda Emond and she was fantastic. She has a very versatile voice. Her voice has movement, rising and falling as she narrates. Emond's voice was perfect and will, for me, always be the voice of Tempe. The voices for the new supporting characters were believable and easily identified. When there's talking, it's easy to believe there are two people speaking. I found by listening to this one, I took in more. I heard the humor in Reich's writing. Yes, there are lots of funny lines in such a 'deadly' book. Her voice is pleasant to listen to and easy to understand. And as I always say, I feel more drawn in to a tale when I listen. ( )
