Despite her father being a prominent captain of industry in her hometown of Providence, Sophronia Tempest struggles to be taken seriously in her chosen career as a journalist. It is when she and her boyfriend, the eminently suitable Arthur Botwink, attend a meeting of a supposed sect, the Starry Sodality, and hear an address by Isadora Blank, self-declared 'Hierophant and Opener of the Way', that things start to spiral out of control. Before she knows it, Sophronia, Arthur, and the irascible Reuben Standeven - a fellow journalist, who keeps getting the assignments she deserves - are caught up in far-reaching events beyond their imagining. Following their instincts, they find themselves in another world and are party to a fiendish scheme that seems set to come to a head on the day of the big parade to celebrate 250 years since the founding of Providence. Unless, that is, they can stop it. But how is Sophronia's mentor, the celebrated academic Professor Aurion Charnley, involved? And where do all the cats keep disappearing to?… (meer)

A plucky young female reporter and her over-eager coworker seek to figure out why the Providence, Rhode Island's cats have been disappear and uncover the dark forces threatening the city.
Fluffy and fun, but didn't quite live up to my hopes. I was expecting more steampunk and less Lovecraft.

I really enjoyed this story! I love historical fiction with a little mystery. The supernatural spin caught me off guard, but it fit. ( )

Disclaimer: I received a copy of this as an Early Reviewer. No compensation was received other than the chance to read this work.

This tale, which tells of two reporters that end up looking into the story of a speaker who seems to have a connection with unknown spirits, is less a steampunk story than a story about extradimensional contact and the way that the speaker tries to lure people to believe in it. If you were expecting something closer to a traditional steampunk story, this isn't the work for you. The story itself tended to be a little uneven, which made reading it feel tedious when it shouldn't have.

Recommended for: Those who enjoy extradimensional stories; those who like short fiction ( )

A mash-up of Lovecraft and Dunsany, apparently written in Gernsbackian style. I didn’t particularly warm to it; I found the writing style somewhat off-putting. Apart from that, a reasonable story, and less nihilistic than most Lovecraft. An OK read.
