I loved this as it felt very true to my favorite Balogh novels, although there was a lot to get through considering we didn’t hear what the big secret was until the halfway point. Her themes around family are wonderful, and I kind of adored how Philippa fell for the family before she fell for Lucas. Their story and the conclusion were both lovely and exactly where they needed to be, and I look forward to the next one bringing more of these two families together. I'm always thrilled to get a new Balogh book, but this one was just okay. The story felt wrapped in cotton, in that I just couldn't get a good feel for the characters. I was 'told' often how they felt about each other, but I never seemed to be 'shown' it. Indeed, scenes were often contradictory. While I enjoyed the Duke and Duchess of Wilby, it seemed odd that they had the final say on so many things. Yes, Luc is dutiful, but why did Pippa feel obligated to obey them? I often felt like I was missing crucial information. Anyway, it was more of a miss for me, but I'm very anxious to read the next book in the series (Ben and Jenny's story). Pippa’s conflict! The fallout from Devlin Ware accosting his father publicly at the village Grand Fete was his sister Lady Phillipa Ware, elder daughter of the late Earl of Stratton, being stunned when she heard herself being referred to as spoiled goods by Lucas Arden, the Marquess of Roath. That rejection decided Pippa about not making her presentation and come out for four years. Other things stood in the way as well, but this was the deciding factor. Pippa could not stand the thought of being given the cut direct by other members of the ton. Luc’s grandfather, the Duke of Wilby, wants him to marry. It seems the Duke has set his sights on Pippa, whom Luc knows wants nothing to do with him. He’s agonising over his immature response of the past, but might there also be something else going on? I was somewhat dismayed by the beginning of the novel, it seemed somewhat flat, but by the end I loved it. I also grew to adore Luc’s grandparents the Duke and Duchess of Wilby. Let me just say the ending had the tears flowing! A Berkley Group ARC via NetGalley. Many thanks to the author and publisher. I’m torn on this series — on the one hand, classic Mary Balogh: lovely characters, solid romance, interesting families. On the other hand, you kind of have to accept that the premise won’t really make any sense unless you also accept that the characters are very emotional and totally invested in hanging on to past misunderstandings until they’ve beaten them to death. Not my favorite series, but still glad to see the next one. Advanced Readers Copy provided by edelweiss geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

Inevitably it all works out but honestly I wanted to lock them in a room and urge them to use their words. ( )
