Twenty-something Marian Brand is as surprised as anyone when she learns that she has inherited a house by the sea from an estranged uncle. The house is occupied by other relatives who had been passed over by the uncle. Rather than turn them out of their home, Marian returns it to its original semi-detached state. The current residents will live in one side, and Marian and her sister and brother-in-law will live in the other. No sooner has Marian moved in than someone from the other side is murdered. This classic mystery has elements of both a country house mystery and a locked room mystery. The locked doors between the two sides of the house seem to limit the murder suspects to those on one side of the house. I was disappointed that readers know exactly how and when the door between the houses was unlocked. This seems to miss the point of a locked room plot. ( )
