I really liked how different this book was compared to the other stories about World War 2. You usually hear about the Jews and their persecution but this book showed a perspective that was about a queen from Netherlands and a little boy that brought her blueberries. A nice true story that is never told against the contrast of the horrible war. ( )

A little boy with a big imagination wishes he could do something to help during the war like his parents and brother did. However, he knew he was too young to do anything to help win the war. Every night, William imagines that he is a night winning battles until then war is over. When the Queen is taking refuge in America in an estate near William's home, he decides to bring her some fresh picked blueberries. The boy is then invited to give the queen the blueberries in person, which shows him that she is another regular woman. I loved the illustrations because they were very powerful in showing William's imagination. I think what truly made this a great story is that it's a true story. ( )

Set in the summer of 1942 and during World War II, this is the story of what happens when a queen rents an estate in a small town in America. Of course, a queen coming to your city in general would be out-of this world, but imagine if she was your neighbor for a few months? This was the case for William, and like anybody would be, he was determined to catch a glimpse of Her Highness. After a talk with his father, William picks a basket of blueberries especially for her and marches over the the estate, determined to give them directly to the Queen himself. The setting being not only in a small town but also in 1942 make the story, which is actually based on a true one, all the more remarkable and believable. Themes like "everyone has a purpose and can make a difference" resonate and also help to strengthen the true meaning of the story. This is a great read for anyone looking for the belief that even the smallest of people and actions can have the biggest of impacts. ( )

The book is about a boy who dreams to meet the Netherlands' Queen who moved down the street from him in Massachusetts during the war in 1942. The boy wanted to meet the Queen so badly and do something to help the war effort. After being inspired by his father, the boy gained the courage to bring his blueberries to the Queen for "peace work". One theme in the book is to have courage, without courage the boy wouldn't have tried to approach the Queen to bring her blueberries. Another theme in in this book is to dream big. The boy often dreams that he is knight fighting for the Queen. The boy's dream is what also inspired him to want to meet the Queen. The setting of the 1942 war effected the story because it gave reason for a Queen to live in America, which gave the boy reason to dream of being a knight. ( )
