The art is fine, considering this is early CLAMP, but nothing I'd recommend. The writing is pretty bad and the plot is pretty uninteresting. If you like age gap stories, this might be for you. ( ) After reading X beforehand, it is really intangible for me to ever see Seishiro Sakurazuka as a bubbly veterinarian who tags along the Sumeragi siblings while the brother of the duo named Subaru performs all sorts of exorcisms in downtown Tokyo. I am well aware of the grim ending of this manga thanks to X, but it is still a huge thrill to learn the complicated relationship between Subaru and Seishiro when they used to be very close friends. The first volume seems harmless enough, with some interesting stories and lighthearted beginning. I will always be a super huge fan of CLAMP's oldest manga, and sure enough, Tokyo Babylon is a really fun read. still trying to find more in Clamp to love.... this is an early work, a neat premise (peace to the dead, the ghosts of Tokyo nightlife), and appealing (though unlikely) central characters. and there's plenty (the ancient family of assassins, for instance) here for them to expand on in future books. all the little homely details - what they eat casually in the city, for instance - are charming - but in the bigger picture the three characters seem mismatched and one-note here, and nothing goes anywhere much... so it feels like it's all setup and no play. which isn't the best way to begin, i can't help feeling, because it doesn't draw the reader in. or, at any rate, not this reader. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

Tokyo is the cultural and economic hub of the Eastern world. Its man-made tower stretches toward the heavens - a symbol of its people's ambition and spirit. My name is Sumeragi Subaru, and I give peace to the dead. No matter where my work leads me, I suspect I'll never leave Tokyo in spirit. But then again, it seems so few people do these days.
