Thomas Berry is a Catholic monk who is a provocative thinker and writer who argues that our future as a species depends on re-examining our relationship with the earth. Rather than a theologian, Thomas Berry considers himself to be a cosmologist and a geologian, a student of the nature of the universe and the functioning of the earth. Berry has spent his life writing and talking about the rift that separates humanity from the earth on which we live. The story of the universe has been told in many ways by the peoples of the earth, he writes, from the earliest periods of Paleolithic development to the classical civilizations. In all these, the story of the universe has given meaning to life and to existence itself. It has provided guidance and sustaining energy in shaping the course of human affairs. Theologian Thomas Berry argues that the damage we are doing to the earth suggests we have lost any understanding of ourselves. He calls for a New Story, a new myth for our times.
