I bought this on a whim and was annoyed to discover that it covers the aftermath of the Mountain Meadows Massacre, while I'm far more interested in the events leading up to it and why it happened in the first place. But I guess it did fill in a lot of gaps in my knowledge about this subject, so it served its purpose. Narratively, though, I've read better nonfiction. ( ) From Pages xv and xvi: "We believe our decision to tell the story in a narrative style is another reason Massacre at Mountain Meadows reached so many readers. We chose to continue that narrative format in this volume . . ." From Page 3: "As her eyes adjusted to the coolness of the brick-and-plaster interior, she made out several clerk desks." There is narrative history and then there are non-fiction novels. That quote from Page 3 feels like it belongs more in the latter. I hope it was an outlier. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
Published in 2008, Massacre at Mountain Meadows was a bombshell of a book, revealing the story of one of the worst moments in Latter-day Saint history, when settlers in southwestern Utah slaughtered more than 100 members of a California-bound wagon train in 1857. In this much-anticipated sequel, Richard E. Turley Jr. and Barbara Jones Brown examine the aftermath of this horrific event, tracing the stories of perpetrators and survivors alike, showing how southern Utah leaders worked to silence participants and witnesses in an attempted cover up, and answering the question of what role, if any, Brigham Young played in the cover-up.
