This unit is each student's passport to learning about eight world cultures and their customs. It begins with the room environment and a chart of basic information about shelter, clothing, food and water, education and resources. There is a reproducible student passport, which can be stamped for each country the child visits in the course of his or her studies. Topics and activities covered include: Who Is a Neighbor?, Who Is My Neighbor?, My Neighbor (a poem by Jill Norris), and All People Have Basic Needs (featuring a How I Meet My Basic Needs student-made book with illustrations). The eight country sections begin with Australia. There are follow-up activities for the book Possum Magic by Mem Fox, Marsupial Patterns, and Marsupial Math. Then comes Kenya, with a Learning About Kenya page centered around Kenya's motto harambee (meaning unity, strength and peace), Making African Beads and Counting in Swahili. Egypt comes next, with a Learning About Egypt page emphasizing the importance of family, the Ancient Egyptians, and an exercise called Write the Arabic Alphabet. Canada is next, with a Learning About Canada devoted to the Animals of Canada, Soapstone Carvings, and Symbols of Canada. Then there is Indonesia, with a Learning About Indonesia page examining their national motto, Bhinneka Tunggal Ika (Unity in Diversity), a Batik Bookmark, and Wayang: Indonesian Shadow Puppets. Argentina's section includes a lesson in Spanish and a description of A Gaucho, Then comes France, with a focus on The Fleur-de-lis Prints and a lesson in French. Next comes Sweden, with a discussion of Everyman's Right, and Sprattelgubbe -- a favorite Swedish Toy. The introduction to each country synopsizesinformation on that country's shelter, language, resources, exports, education, and food. It also displays line art of the country's flag and an example of the traditional clothing of its people. Along with closing pages on Jobs to Share with Our Neighbors Around the World and Hands Around the World, there is a full-color, two-sided pull-out poster about My Friends and The World Is Our Neighborhood. Teaching suggestions provided. Includes bibliography, and complete step-by-step instructions for all activities. All pages are reproducible and perforated for easy removal.… (meer)
