This book had me at the edge of my seat guessing what could be going on and who could have done it. The story is laid out beautifully a the switch of perspective was a surprise that I didn’t know I wanted so dearly. At first I didn’t know how I would feel and the times the story takes place but I have to say if it was set in another time the story would not have had the same effect.

I enjoyed this book from the start. I have not read any other books by the author and it was not until I had finished the book that there was another in the series.
At times I wanted to shout at Izzy to stop taking her medicine and to leave Sal.
A well constructed book leaving the reader still unsure of what will come.

It's 1934. Isabella and Sal are in an arranged marriage with two teenage sons.
Sal is an abusive husband and most likely a member of the Mafia. When two teenage girls are found dead, there suspects, including one of Isabella's sons. I hoped Isabella would stand up to Sal, protecting her sons is her most important thing she has to do.
The suspense and unknown events are captivating.
The writing is excellent, the pacing is good, and the characters are believable.
I didn't realize this was a prequel. I will definitely be reading the other two books in the series. ( )

Okay so starting off with the fact that this is not the genre that I usually read. I don’t have that much experience with mysteries since I mostly read fantasy and sci-fi and I just wanted to try something new. The story itself was very well put together. Towards the end everything that happened in the book got explained and I liked that it had a really nice wrapped up ending. I do think that it had kind of a slow start and that it took me over half the book to actually get interested in the outcome. I saw that this was a prequel to a different series and I might read that one now that I’ve read this anyway. I do feel like this book would’ve been better perceived by people that have read the series I mentioned before. In general, I enjoyed it towards the end but I probably won’t be rereading it… ( )
