Eric Phillson and his wife Anna we’re happy living in Fort Myers Florida but when he got the opportunity to help build a whole new pediatric heart clinic for Children’s Hospital of Biloxi at first he hesitated but after visiting and bringing his family for a visit he decided to do it. The hospital was below the national standard average for care in this move would bring lots of personal strengths and challenges and would affect his personal life and his standing as a heart surgeon. From Doctors who wine like children and abuse the staff to working under strenuous conditions and with no access to the things needed to run a healthy hospital even hurricanes. To say the doctor was tested is an understatement but Mr. Mafako tells the story with a Witt and grace not always seen in fiction. I thought this book was so humorous and found myself laughing out loud he is so talented in writing very stressful situations and breaking the tension with humor and clever solutions I really and thoroughly enjoyed this book it is a top-notch five star read I can honestly say one of my favorite books this year. I don’t think I have ever read a book by this author but this will definitely not be my last this is based on a true story and it’s one I highly recommend. Please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review. A beautiful, heartbreaking read, especially in the face of so much devastation in recent years. Although facing the fallout of a natural disaster, and not a pandemic, the effects come out the same - trying so hard to save lives, with such limited resources takes a serious toll on Eric’s mind. He has such a big heart, and a strong desire to help others, which just pours off the page and wraps around the reader, and his struggles truly shine through and tug at your heart strings. We get quite the in-depth look at what goes on behind the scenes at hospitals/medical centers, and it’s clear the author drew on their own experiences when writing this. My only real complaint is there are a few lulls in the story, and a few things felt repetitive, but otherwise it was a great read that was difficult to set down. Ok. let’s begin, This novel centres around the pressures and challenges faced by many individuals in our fast-paced society, and Dr Eric Philson is no different, suffering with burnout and dealing with the complexities of every day life. As the reader, I was taken on an emotional and though provoking rollercoaster ride, exploring some of the pressures and challenges that many individuals are faced with on a daily basis in today’s society. The author has created a realistic and relatable main character, in Dr Eric Philson, and I loved him, I felt every emotion he portrayed within his relationship, career and his mental well-being, showing the awful impact that burnout has not just the individual but on friends, family, work colleagues etc.. The sad thing is that this is becoming a part of reality for far too many people these days. I highly recommend this book to anyone out there who likes to read a relatable narrative that delves into important themes that are all too common in today’s society. Dr. Eric Philson, a dedicated physician charged with building a cardiac critical care unit at Biloxi's Children's Hospital, takes center stage in Burned Out by Dean Mafako. This emotional narrative embarks on his journey, shedding light on the trials and sacrifices inherent in pursuing excellence in the demanding realm of medicine, all while taking a toll on Dr. Philson's personal life and well-being. One standout element of this tale is the exceptional quality of the prose. Mafako's meticulous writing immerses readers in vivid settings and fosters a deep connection with the characters. The author's profound grasp of the subject matter lends authenticity to the narrative, at times making it resemble a genuine memoir. There truly is burnout in all kinds of professions, medical being one of them. This is a great read, insightful and emotional. Recommended. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
Eric Philson came to the Children's Hospital of Biloxi with a goal -- to build the cardiac intensive care unit from the ground up. The physician faces insurmountable odds: the devastating aftereffects of a hurricane, deprivation of essential staff and resources, and a cardiac surgeon resistant to change. Dr. Philson will do whatever it takes to help improve the care for children, until the job begins to take a toll on his free time, marriage, and health. How much is he willing to sacrifice? Working hundred-hour weeks, overcoming the impossible, and facing personal ruin are only the start of what he will face. Does he have the grit and determination to do what's right, even if it costs him everything? Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |

The book is pretty long, so get ready for a good, long read. I took my time, and even though it's a big story, the writing is clear and not too hard. It talks about the tough stuff behind the scenes in the hospital, giving you a real peek into the medical world. However, I don't think it's just for medical folks; it shows how hard any big job can be.
It helps a reader get the perspective of what might be happening to doctors. (Also, I think in any profession). It is more than just medicine; it shows what people like Eric give up. It makes you think about how much it costs to do the right thing. The book, in simple words, is a deep look at trying hard and what it might cost you. It's like taking a trip into a world where people work really hard to make things better, and you can feel it with every turn of the page ( )
