Finished reading this book aloud to the kids TODAY! Hooray- it took all of 6 months.. with *many* breaks in between.. But it was a great read aloud. We had to look up many of the nautical terms and lingo, but it was a good story over all. I think I said in my original post that I wouldn't have picked this book up on my own. It's an adventure story about seafaring pirates.. And that is not something that grabs me, but nevertheless I did enjoy reading it to the kids. And now we can say we've read Treasure Island! ( )

Treasure island tells the story of a boy named Jim. Who while working a this father's inn finds a map of a mysterious island in a dead residents chest [Dead man's chest :)]. He sets off in hopes of finding treasure. Yet mutiny, double crossing and back stabbing complicate their journey. I would reccomend this book to children over the age of 9 to any age above. This read will keep you facinated and thrilled. I would most definantly read this book if you enjoyed Hunger Games or any pirate book.

Read this again for the first time! It's been many years and it was like reading it fresh again - ya gotta love getting old! A Classic and must-read; there are so many concepts, phrases and ideas that originated with this book. Very enjoyable.

For a children's book, it is a bit rough by today's standards, but the moral lessons of loyalty are powerful - the moral ambiguity is a lesson. ( )

"""Fifteen men on the dead man's chest -- Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum!"" is the password to adventure in this classic novel of buried gold, lost islands, buccaneers, old maps, mutiny and piracy on the high seas.
Young Jim Hawkins first met the old sea-dog they called ""The Captain"" at his father's inn, The Admiral Benbow, where he took up his lodgings. He was a strange, rough old fellow, forever asking if others of his calling had come to this lonely spot and especially a man with only one leg. And then one day a stranger did arrive at the inn asking for the captain, though by another name, and for Jim his coming marked the beginning of a series of adventures as exciting and perilous as ever befell any youngster.
Treasure Island is full of colourful and often villainous characters whose names have lived down the years -- Ben Gunn, Old Pew, Billy Bones, and that king of rascals, Long John Silver. The story of their quest for the ""pieces of eight"" so cunningly hidden by the dreaded Cap'n flint is one of the most exciting ever written. It has been filmed and dramatised for television, but is never more absorbing than when read in Stevenson's own immortal words."
