This play was written in 1989 by a noted Indigenous playwright in Canada. The author had previously written another play [The Rez Sisters] about women living on a reserve in Ontario and Dry Lips is considered a companion piece - with the men on the reserve as the main focus. The story covers the rivalries for love and more in this expressionistic view of life on the reserve. The women- never seen except for one character who is both goddess and specific women- have formed a hockey team. The audience follows the action from the viewpoint of the men. The concerns are tragic and funny at different points in the story. Highway uses a combination of music, mime and dance to explore the concerns of indigenous people who live on the reservation in the late 1980's. I must find and read [The Rez Sisters] now. ( )
